- After our first report, Europe and Japan banned most uses and types of the most problematic gadolinium MRI dyes.
- The FDA decided not to issue a ban in the U.S. saying benefits outweigh risks.
- The FDA issued a warning, instead.
- The FDA says there's more risk with Omniscan or OptiMARK than Eovist, Magnevist, or MultiHance.
Since 2017, I've reported on the increasing safety issues surrounding some commonly-used MRI dye known as "gadolinium." I told the story with help from the wife of Chuck Norris who almost died from gadolinium toxicity after a series of MRIs.
After my initial report on Full Measure, the questionable dyes were banned in many countries. However, the FDA chose instead to issue a warning.
The problem is, not many people have heard of the warning and it's not easy to find on the FDA website, as I reported.
Many doctors are also unaware. One expert explained to me that the medical doctors who refer patients for MRIs count on the radiologist to know about the dye warnings and risks. However, the radiologists who do know typically don't see or consult with the patients, so the information is not transmitted.
My Full Measure story below is the only place I know of where the safety information-- by brand, according to the FDA-- is easily accessible.
You can watch the video at the end of the text below.
Three decades of scientific thought regarding the safety of dye commonly used in MRIs has been upended but odds are you haven't heard much about it. Today we begin with an important follow up to a story we first brought you last year. We told the distressing case of Chuck Norris and his wife Gena, who became critically ill after her MRIs. After our original report aired, health bodies in the U.S. and many other countries made major changes. So why don't you know more about them?
Chuck Norris and his wife Gena are now suing McKesson Corporation and other companies related to gadolinium MRI dye. Dozens of gadolinium poisoning claims have been filed nationwide.
Gena Norris: I want to try this case in the public because they would love for it to remain in the shadows and not be talked about.
Chuck Norris: Windy today, but it's beautiful.
We first told you their story last June. Their nightmare began when Gena had three MRIs in one week to evaluate her rheumatoid arthritis and ended up in the ER over and over.
Gena Norris: And by the fourth, fifth, sixth night, the burning just kept traveling and I would go in and they'd say, well what's wrong with you? And I'm like I, I don't know. I don't feel good. And I'm just, I'm burning. I, that's all I can tell you is I'm burning all over. I feel like I have acid everywhere in my tissues, I'm just, I'm on fire.
Doctors didn't consider that Gena might have been poisoned by gadolinium, the toxic heavy metal in the dye injected into her for the MRIs. After researching scientific literature and connecting to patients online, Gena told her husband she knew what was wrong.
Gena Norris: When we got to the hospital in Houston, I said I'm only going to be able to tell you one time this last time and I need you to listen to me very closely. I have been poisoned with gadolinium or by gadolinium and we don't have much time to figure out how to get this out of my body or I am going to die.
Chuck Norris: I can take her anywhere in the world. I'm blessed enough to have the money to do that, but where do I take her?
They only found help with alternative medicine doctors who discovered Gena's gadolinium levels were literally off the charts. Healing has taken several years and two million dollars of treatments not covered by insurance. We caught up with the Norris' again at their Texas ranch where Gena is still in intensive treatment.
Gena Norris: Like I've said before, we're all broken. We are broken. If I were to stop any of those things with gadolinium deposition disease, it's lurking in my body and it talks to me. If I am exposed to things or under too much stress, I can feel very, very symptomatic. But I'm still healing.
Sharyl Attkisson: If you had to explain in just a paragraph or so what this lawsuit is about, what would you say?
Todd Walburg: This lawsuit is about a big cover up by the drug companies that has resulted in a whole population of people who had been poisoned by Gadolinium. There's internal documents that go back decades that show that the companies knew about the risks of Gadolinium.
Todd Walburg is the Norris' attorney. He attended an FDA safety meeting that was scheduled shortly after our story aired; one advocates had pressed for for years. Gena's case was brought up.
Voice of FDA Advisor Alicia Toledano: The disconnect noted in Gena Norris' statement is so true all across this country every single day.
Todd Walburg: At the conclusion of that September hearing, there was a vote held and the FDA committee voted 13 to one in favor of requiring additional warnings.
The only "no" vote came from one FDA adviser who said the recommended warnings weren't strong enough.
Alicia Toledano: When a patient finally does get tested and is found to have gadolinium retention, but there is no FDA approved antidote. What does that patient do?
There's been a dramatic evolution in thought since MRI dye was introduced 30 years ago. Doctors and the FDA used to insist gadolinium was quickly urinated out of the body. But in 2006, internal FDA documents show, scientists recognized gadolinium was linked to a deadly disease that causes thickening and tightening of the skin and organs: nephrogenic systemic fibrosis or NSF. In 2007, the FDA added a serious "black box" warning, but only for patients with weak kidneys. In 2010, an expanded warning about repeat MRIs. Then, in 2015, the FDA also acknowledged, there could be risks to people with normal kidneys.
FDA video: Recent studies conducted in people and animals have confirmed that gadolinium can remain in the brain even in individuals with normal kidney function. Available information does not identify any adverse health effects.
By then, injured patients like Sharon Williams were networking online. She had five MRIs with gadolinium over several years and got sicker each time.
Sharon Williams: So my symptoms got dramatically worse after dose 4. We thought there had to be something wrong with my brain, so I had dose 5 for a brain MRI. And literally all hell broke loose after that. I mean, it was terrible.
Sharyl Attkisson: Meaning what?
Sharon Williams: Meaning that's when all the symptoms went crazy. I mean, I couldn't begin to tell you how severe some of the symptoms were as far as pain, spasms, problems with my blood pressure.
Sharyl Attkisson: How did you figure out it was this gadolinium?
Sharon Williams: In 2014, I had part of my thyroid gland removed and gadolinium was in it, 51 months after my last MRI.
Williams contacted the FDA regularly starting in 2012, presenting scientific research and asking for help, only to be told the matter was under study.
It's taken years for major health bodies to acknowledge major issues. In May of last year, the FDA stepped up warnings again, saying gadolinium is not only retained in the brain but in body organs, too. But it downplayed any risks. Shortly after, Europe and Japan banned most uses and types of the most problematic gadolinium dyes. The FDA decided on a different approach last December, deciding not to issue a ban in the U.S.; insisting gadolinium benefits outweigh any risks. Instead, the FDA ordered new safety studies. According to the FDA, the bigger problem occurs with the types of dyes called "linear," which stay in the body longer and in larger amounts. The FDA says there's more risk with Omniscan or OptiMARK than Eovist, Magnevist, or MultiHance. The lowest levels remain in the body after Dotarem, Gadavist and ProHance, according to the FDA.
You might think all of this would make national headlines since MRIs are so common. There are 30 million MRIs in the US each year. But we had to hunt pretty hard to find the latest safety information on the FDA website. It wasn't on the main MRI page. When we clicked over to MRI safety, it wasn't there either. And it didn't show up when we searched "MRI dye safety" or "MRI dye." We finally found it when we searched "Gadolinium safety."
Gadolinium manufacturers say they're following all FDA recommendations. Some are phasing out so-called "linear" gadolinium dyes. The makers firmly deny any cover up and say they've taken action and followed FDA rules as soon as they've learned of any safety concerns.
The Norris' say the FDA hasn't done enough.
Gena Norris: Well, they made some acknowledgement. They've moved the needle a little bit, but they haven't moved it enough.
Sharyl Attkisson: Some people think because your name is on this cause, that's what's helped it get attention and maybe that's what even helped spur the FDA action after so many years.
Chuck Norris: I really don't think so. I think it's her because she had a good way of explaining what is going on. I am just her companion. I am trying to keep her healthy and that's what I've been doing for five years.
Gena Norris: Five years. Five Years.
Chuck Norris: But the thousands of others who can't afford this, and this is what bothers me is seeing, see, I'm so grateful for my wife, but I want to see these people being taken care of too.
Gena Norris: I don't need this stress, but it's become so personal to the victims, that either died or that are suffering in silence and that don't have a voice. Thankfully we have a platform and as far as I'm concerned, I'll be their worst nightmare until they do the right thing. I'm not going away. I'm just, I'm not going away.
McKesson told us that since it distributes but doesn't manufacture gadolinium, it's never been involved in the FDA-approval process.

Shocking..... Just really shocking. FDA is supposed to be about safety for Americans not industry profit.
Nancy Carabine says
The article does not say what alternatives helped Mrs. Norris. I can assume because I complained to every doctor that I was having issues from the gadolinium and I was treated as a hysterical fool and I sought help, too. Are you able to enlighten us/me with her treatment?
I would like to comment as I have done extensive reseach as a GDD patient. Although I do not know of all her treatments, I do know that she sought alternative treatment through a facility in Reno, Nevada, I believe it was Chinese Medicine, along with Chelation. I found the facility and Doctor, but it was more than I could afford and I could not be there for 3 - 8 weeks of longer, she also had hyperbaric chamber treatment, She was hospitalized for months then treated out of the country for months as well.
I have young children at home and this was not an option for both family and financial reasons. The following is what I have found to be of tremndous help.
I do the HYPERBARIC CHAMBER TREATMENT TWICE WEEKLY - it has helped with the MIGRAINES, OCCULAR PROBLEMS, BLURRED VISION, COGNITIVE FUNCTION AND INFECTION. I NOTICE MY SKIN FEELS BETTER AS WELL.
I recommend DR. RICHARD SEMELKA'S treatment using Ca-DTPA and current research, intstead of the EDPTA formula. Many having the EDPTA chealation treantments have reported adverse side effects and displacement of Gd in new places of their bodies. I have had good levels removed through Dr. Richard Semelka's process and will never do EDTPA. He is an Advocate in the medical industry for those suffering with Gadolinium disease and toxicity and knows this is a real disease.
He is also committed to research and studies to help bring these ligitamate health issues to his Piers, in the medical field, such that care is available to patients everywhere. He has dedicated himself to help both, Gadolinium Patients and the Medical Industry. I can't say enough here about this Doctors dedication and commitment! He is compassionate and dedicated!
He can be reached online through his consultation services and blogs by Google search. I am one of his patients, so I know first hand.
I would say that all who are suffering from Gadolinium health problems have been either dismissed by their doctos as hysterical, depressed, sent for unnecessary testing, which sometimes inclueds more MRI;s, for non-existing illnesses, or, have just outright not been believed, even laughed at, belittled, reprimended and told its all in your head and nothing is wrong.
Very few are being listened to for varying reasons.
That being said, I personally believe that this happens because hospitals and doctors have not been properly informed or trained by the Pharmacuetical companies, along with the FDA who sis not doing enough, on the health risks and problems for those with normal renal function, and what the symptoms of Gadolinium toxicity/poisening presents in those patients. They believe it is safe,so they don't even think about it or believe it to be possible. Most don't even know where to have the tests run or who to turn to if they think it a possibility.
Dr. Semelka publishes many articles, research findings and at home, natural ways for patients to help themselves. I have found many of these solutions helpful.
SALT BATHS W/BAKING SODA - I also use a natural Ayuervadic Herbal soap and loofa glove to remove outer skin cells. I exfoliate the thickened skin on the bottoms of my feet with a pedi file everyday while bathing. I follow with a shower to rinse off possible Gd seeping through pores of skin. I then apply a cobination of these ORGANIC OILS - GINGER-OIL, VITAMIN-E OIL, VITAMIN-C OIL AND COCONUT-OIL TO ALL OF MY SKIN. I have been able to reverse many of the skin leasions, blisters and patches by this method, for the most part my skin has cleared up. When it starts to flare I use the same method. So far, it is working. I have before and after pictures.
ORGANIC TUMERIC TWICE DAILY FOR INFLAMMATION
CBD OIL FOR INFLAMMATION
POTASSIAM TO HELP WITH LEG SPASMS & MASSAGING GINGER OIL DURING SPASMS HAS HELPED - especially in arms, hands, legs and feet.
LYMPHATIC STRETCHING & GENTLE MASSAGE (some you can do for yourself) google search to see what to do. Does not require pressure or deep massage. Helps with most everything.
Stretching all muscle groups, even gently, has helped me stay mobil and to retain mobility as stiffening of joints and muscles tissue has occurred.
ELEVATING FEET, LEGS & ARMS TO HELP CIRCULATION - important to do!
ORGANIC GINGER ROOT/POWDER, GINGER TEA OR GINGER ALE are all good for Nausea and IMMUNE SYSTEM. GINGER IS PRETTY MUCH GOOD FOR EVERYTHING!
I HAVE FOUND THAT THE GINGER PATCHES CAN CAUSE A SKING FLARE FOR ME. THEY DID HELP MY PAIN! BUT I AM ALLERGIC TO ADHESIVE AND THEY DO STICK TO THE SKIN. SO BE CAREFUL WITH THESE.
ORGANIC PINEAPPLE - Is an excellent help to the pancreas, liver and other organs for detoxification. Eat only raw.
Eat healthy foods that are easy for your body to digest! You do not need any further load on your body as it is trying to process the POISON - Gd and eliminate it. Anything you can to do help the process that is natural and not introducing hardship is good!
I hope this helps to some degree.
I give the publisher permission to share my contact information privately with those who would like more information from me. I am not sure of the process of that, but am certainly willing.
I have been an MRI Technologist for years and injected many of these contrast agents. I like Sharyl's reporting. I do have to say, regarding the portion of this article stating that the radiologist don't consult with the patients. At our facility and I'm sure it is standard practice at most, patients are provided with information to read about the contrast they are going to have injected and a consent form to sign if they agree to it. And, of course, they can refuse and some do, or can ask questions prior to consent. Trust me, in our field, in the US and abroad, this matter is taken very seriously.
Sharyl Attkisson says
I don't doubt you... but based on personal experience and information from medical doctors and other professionals, the radiologists typically do not consult with the patient. Of course papers are presented for signature. This is not the same as a consultation. In fact, a patient would not know the question to ask in a vacuum to understand this issue. They would have to know about it in advance.. or know if they have an ongoing possible response that they should somehow personally try to reach out to a radiologist to discuss... but first they would have to recognize that they are having a possible response, when most have no idea it's possible. And the reactions vary by the individual. I am glad you take it seriously; however, many patients have been misdiagnosed, gone undiagnosed, and been subjected to repeat MRIs with nobody recognizing that their symptoms are being worsened by the MRIs. Hopefully word will spread.
Most people do not understand the medical termonology used in the forms. If, in fact they have the information on them at all. In my case, I was aksed by the Radiologist if I had kideny disease or renal failure, which I did not at the time, but all Doctors and Radiologist knew that I was allergic to Contrast Dye & Iodine, they also knew that I had a lifetime hystory of allergies and Bronchial Asthma, which was my main health problem throughout my life of 56 years at the time. They knew that I had a stomach bacteria and infection I was dealing with, they knew that I was about to have surgery and they knew that I was hypersensitive to medication, meaning 1/2 dose of anything was generally the right does for me, they also knew that I had low heart rate, low blood pressure and sub-normal temperature. I even asked if it was safe to have two MRI's 3 days apart and was told it was fine. Even by the Radiologist.
Why do I share that information?
I say all of that and ask that you "READ NEW WARNINGS ON GADAVIST," that is supposed to be the "SAFE" caged gadolinium and is still promoted as safe.
I also addressed my allergies and reactions with the Radiologist each time I had an MRI, again, wellcheck, watching for "possible" genetic change, not because I had cancer. I did not and have never had it.
Although, the radioligist did tell me it could be dangerous to have the test due to the allergic reaction, anaphylectic shock was the main concern, as my throat would tighten and I would break out in a red hot rash at the injection sight, my chest, stomach and then to my thighs.
But again, KNOW ONE EVER MENTIONED GADOLINIUM OR HEAVY METAL TOXICITY OR RETENTION OR HEALTH ISSUES FROM THAT, those words were never spoken, nor did I see any warnings pertaining to them in writing, I've looked at my paper work from then. I was assured that a steroid and allergy prep pack was adequate and would solve and lesson the issue of allergy reaction. No one addressed anthing that I am dealing with today, following 5 MRI's for screening purposes only. I have 100% of the symptoms, to some degree or another, of Gd poisnening, toxicity, disease and even NSF symptoms. I have been disabled and unable to work since 2017. I have only discovered the high levels of Gd in my body after the last MRI in April 2019, which led to serious Heart Arythimia and put me in the ER 3 days following that MRI. I went through multiple heart test. I finally found a place on my own to run the simple 24Hr Urine test that any doctor could have ordered in the past 3 years.
Why not find out, be sure help people on the front end? Why not be sure?
My Organs effected to date, Bladder, Colon, Heart, Diaphram, Esophagus. Muscle tissue - thickening of abdomen muscles, thigh muscles, calves, shoulder blade, pelvic floor issues, arms, legs, thighs, back, stomach & abdomen. Joint - fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles. Brain - cognitive funtion, memory, brain fog, migraines, occular migrains. Eyes - blurred vision, eye muscles. Skin - Electrical burning, pins & needles, periods of blisters, patches of red itchy, painful skin, extreme dry, thickening of tissue. Nerve Pain - spinal cord inflammation, nerve pain in feet, legs, head, arms and hands. Intense fatigue, extreme sensitivity to noise, tinitus that hasn't stopped. Electrical pain runs throughout my body. I could continue with even more, but there is not much point.
I only say all of this because I was considered a normal, healthy patient without renal failure or even mild kidney disease, none. So, I was supposed to be no problem or risk administering the contrast, according to current standards today and doctors awareness.
Please do not think I am blaming you personally, I am not! I am grateful that you are reading and taking the time and take your position seriously. In fact, I think that is true for most doctors. I truly believe the facts of the dangers of Gadolinium, a TOXIC HEAVY METAL, in Human Beings, have been withheld and not revealed in a way to bring attention to it.
I believe that if all doctors and radiologist would just be open, they would be better informed of what is progressing with their patients.
Perhaps, just listening, really hearing, knowing what the symptoms are and recognizing as their patience are sharing....then, run a simple urine test and just make sure...before sending us to all kinds of specialists and rejections that we don't need. We need help getting this poisen out of our bodies. We won't get out of the pain until it is removed from our bodies. For some of us, it is likely too late. But millions, their is still hope!
The warnings have to be clearly stated and addressed so that patients understand! We don't know that Gadavist, or MultiHance is a toxic Heavy Metal! Remember, we are patients usually going through a medical crisis or problem that inhibits the ability to sometimes be able to read or even given time to read and understand all of the paperwork and ask questions.
That being said, I am grateful that you take your work seriously! I just ask that you and others in your field, be open to what your patients are sharing with you. Please listen, please hear us, please be caustious! Please let your patients know the risk clearly!
Just because the scientific research is not complete, does not mean this is not real. It takes time for these studies, and the studies will reveal this horrific diesease, but some of us don't have that kind of time left and need help with pain managment and detoxing our bodies today!
Remember Fybromalgia? Lyme Diesease? It wasn't that long ago that science said they weren't a real disease. Today, we know they are.
We also know that Heavy Metals are Toxic to our bodies and lead to adverse health condtions, Lead, Mercury, Cadium, Arsinic....why would we not consider that Gadolinium does not cause disease?
How many other diseases, where patients were left untreated, suffering & not believed, until we realize something is wrong and become pro-active in their care?
Praying that this helps to shift the consciousness of anyone reading this!
Blessing of health and comfort to all!
Sorry for any typo's! My vision is blurry and I don't catch them all.

Part of the problem is Washington has deep pockets and the pharmaceutical companies have deeper pockets . We have to get the people in Washington to wake up and help stop these companies and make them pay for the damage they have caused us.

I live in London. 2 years ago I had a MRI with the dye. Immediately on coming out of the machine I went into a major sickle cell crisis. Rushed to the hospital, pain management at the haematology department told me it was an allergic reaction to gardolinium. Prior to that MRI I was without painful crises for many years. I was travelling, working and seen as a miracle patient. . Now I have painful crises every week. I’m housebound, with major loss of hearing, needing help to dress, outdoors, etc. My balance is adversely affected. No one has said anything about how to get it out. of ones system. I’d be most grateful if any advice can be offered. This long periods of illnesses have affected not only my work but my marriage also.

I had the MRI with contrast with Magnevist and Multihance. I had breast cancer and they used MRI with contrast with my cancer treatment. During radiation I noticed I wasn't thinking right as I was raped by my upstairs neighbor. He used to sneak in my house when my son left for school. I kept telling him to lock rhe door as I knew the neighbor was sneaking into my apartment! My son said I was crazy and that why would my neighbor be sneaking into the apartment. In the middle of radiation treatments I received a text from rhe the asking what I was doing. I replied looking for my keys as as I had to go to radiation treatments. He replied I'm a great fibder of things amd found some keys by the dumpster. I said I know I had my kitchen table. He then said come on up and see if these keys. I was was desperate and had to go get radiation treatments. So up there and he had my keys. He was jiggling them and said to bend over and then raped me. I was late for my radiation so I did. That's when I realized I didn't think right anymore! That night my daughter went through my phone and read wrote to me. She went into my sons room and was yelling at him and making him read it. My son ran upstairs and was banging on his door. My sister was sitting at the kitchen table with me. She's like what's going on? I told her and she was freaking out! When I saw the head lady in radiation I told her what happened to me that day. She wanted to call the police and I said no as I don't think right anymore and I just wanted her to put into my records just in case something happened to me and the police would know what happened to me. So she said she would. A month or two later I was dying up at the hospital with Obstruction of my small bowels due adhesions. I remember my surgeon had her head in hands shaking her and saying what a mess! Your bowels are twisted and have necrosis and we will have bowel resection and remove your appendix. I was was telling everyone they took my kidneys too! But, they didn't! I kept calling dayghter telling her they keep moving to nursing homes and my ild college. I was at places I remember as a kid. I was pointing out the window see their house that is so and lived. Why are they bringing me here.? My daughter didn't know what to do with me. I saw the guy that raped me and I was talking to him and saying " I know your behind me and tou need ro leave!" He wasn't there! Only in my mind! The hospital would turn in circles as chemotherapy dropped from the lights in the hospital room. They didn't but, in my mind they did! I thiyght I was a dog as un my mind I rhought the iv pole was my lease! I was barking and howling. I ripped out my stomach tube they had in me and was making a run for it. As I had a lighter wasn't afraid to use it! I pointed at the nurses and thought NO tou can't do that! So I put the lighter up to ny neci and rhought No! You can't do that so I the iv pole with the plastic tubing aceoynxhed it up and told them to back off ir the plastic gets it! I heard a nurse laugh and sat something like Barb you can't hurt that. Then a diffeent nurse came up from behind me and stick me something and I dropped to the floor! I was our of my mind! I was at the hospital for two weeks. There is so much more to my story that I'm still battling today! I marked as mental health with the police as I jept wanting to kill myself. OWI'S as I talk funny and walk funny. I ended up homeless. Arter my owi's I wrnt and a MRI to my brain as I wanted to know why did everyone think I was drunk all time, why do I want to kill myself all the time? They got me with Multihance to the brain and my gair if my walk8ng got worse and I remember getting yome and looking ib the mirror and my face was all splotchy dark and red. I started to vleach my face to get rid of all the discoloration. I had blisters all around my mouth and dark circles around my mouth and corners of my eyes. It feels like I will spontaneously conbused sometimes. I couldn't work for years. After I became homeless I finally got my day in front of the administrative law judge via video tape and told him some of my story on why I can't work anymore. It just sat there with his mouth dropped open listwning to me tell some of my story. In June if this year I started receiving my disability benefits and was able to find a nice apartment because he believed my story. I fear that I have NSF. I need a punch biopsy!
So concerned as right now I need several MRIs with contrast. I tell the doctors I am against it but they claim the results will be worthless. One is for my abdomen, the other for my brain/ears. I'm mainly concerned with the one for my brain as I'm having terrible dizziness and issues with my ears that I cannot find help for. I hate to miss out on getting the full picture but I am really against the dye. Can you press to have this done without the contrast and will your insurance reject it if so? Thank you
Sharyl Attkisson says
Caution: experts advised me that certain MRIs need dye; others may not. If it is important that you get dye to make an important diagnosis, such as for a brain issue, experts say it may be worth taking the risk. On the other hand, if it is a procedure in which dye is not necessarily needed, or not an important diagnosis, that's a different equation.
Hi Sharyl 🙂
Could you please update the story on the Norris’s? I heard recently that they withdrew their lawsuits and many of us poisoned with Gd are stumped! Also... Please update us on Gina’s condition too and how Gd is still affecting her life and IF she IS doing better... could you explain the avenues she’s explored and doctors she has seen in the US?
I have watched you for years on different shows and have always admired your poise... your clarity... and honesty! Thank you for being a rare gem in a mountain of bias reporter’s!
Gby. and yours 🙂
