The Greek Burden: Europe’s illegal immigration crisis

This is the first episode of my second podcast: Full Measure After Hours.

The debate in Europe over its illegal immigration and refugee crisis mirrors the one in the U.S.

Hear the behind the scenes story of our Full Measure trip to Greece, where the immigration minister told me the country is near its breaking point.

Investigative Producer David Bernknopf appears in this episode.

  1. Your report on the migrant crisis in Greece was extremely flawed. First off, any such report should start by showing the root cause of the problem – why is there a sudden explosion of refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan in the past decade?

Secondly, to show Greece, with its 50,000 refugees (see: https://www.rescue.org/country/greece ), while overlooking Turkey, who is mentioned in passing a few times and implied to be the source of refugees, is really hard to understand. With close to 4 million refugees Turkey, a European and Asian country, continues to be home to the world’s largest refugee population. (see: https://reliefweb.int/report/turkey/unhcr-turkey-factsheet-august-2018 )

Thus, Turkey’s burden from someone else’s invasions and bombing is higher than anyone’s, but they are being passed up in positive and compassionate attention from an otherwise highly-analytical, independent show Full Measure.

    1. Points taken. From my view, the coverage isn’t flawed. Certainly one story cannot cover all angles of this crisis. I don’t agree that there is a way that any report must start in order for it to be covered properly. However, stay tuned, as we are producing numerous reports on this topic to cover various angles and you may see more facts and information you are looking for in future reports.
