One of the biggest anti-Trump voices in cable television is leaving the news stage.

Chris Matthews announced his retirement on Monday during his program, “Hardball with Chris Matthews.” According to Matthews, he and MSNBC agreed to a mutual parting.

The departure comes after a series of controversies. They include Matthews comparing the campaign of Democrat Socialist Bernie Sanders to the Nazis. Matthews apologized after the comment drew widespread condemnation.

Colleagues of Matthews then went public about what they said were inappropriate comments he made.

Matthews is well known for his comment about then-candidate Barack Obama, a Democrat. Matthews confessed that he gets a “thrill up his leg” when Obama speaks.
