The latest media mistake against Trump, courtesy of The Washington Post

The following is a news analysis.

With President Trump’s departure from the White House, I hoped and wanted to retire my extensive list of “Media Mistakes in the Era of Trump.”

However, there are lingering after effects.

And the Media Mistake I added today (#152) pretty much speaks to how egregious the entire list has proven to be.

This mistake was made by The Washington Post, and it ranks up there among the worst and most irresponsible from a journalistic standpoint.

Washington Post reporter Amy Gardner’s “exclusive” contained false information

Reporter Amy Gardner claimed, in a Washington Post “exclusive,” that Trump had pressured a Georgia elections investigation to– and this was said to be a direct quote– “find the fraud.” Gardner also claimed Trump told the official she would “be a national hero” if she found fraud. And Gardner said that could amount to “obstruction.”

But we now learn none of that was true.

The actual recorded call proved that.

As Brietbart News points out, the Post report “relied on information from a single anonymous source, described as ‘an individual familiar with the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversation’.”

The Washington Post issued a correction on March 11 but, as of this publication, no apology was included, and there’s no word as to what actions, if any, will be taken against the reporter.

The Washington Post correction reads:

Correction: Two months after publication of this story, the Georgia secretary of state released an audio recording of President Donald Trump’s December phone call with the state’s top elections investigator. The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump’s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to “find the fraud” or say she would be “a national hero” if she did so. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to scrutinize ballots in Fulton County, Ga., asserting she would find “dishonesty” there. He also told her that she had “the most important job in the country right now.” A story about the recording can be found here. The headline and text of this story have been corrected to remove quotes misattributed to Trump.

It’s not as if journalists in general, and The Washington Post specifically, haven’t repeatedly gotten caught publishing false and poorly-sourced information over the last four years.

The Washington Post makes at least 21 anti-Trump appearances on my list of Media Mistakes.

  1. Certainly there were people aware of the tape when the fake story was all over the news. Yet no one came forward to set the record straight. In fact I have read that the recording was found in the trash after someone deleted it.
The level of corruption in this country today is truly disgusting.

    1. The corruption in the press is anti Republican. It seems the errors never happen against the left. That’s why the right needs its own servers.

  2. We would learn quite a lot if these “anonymous” sources were revealed. They are all deep state democrats violating the Hatch Act or they are completely fabricated. Even so, these media organizations know exactly what the truth is even before they publish. This is a serious game that will have some very unpleasant consequences.

  3. I actually read the whistle blower story of how they would go in and plant evidence on people’s computers. Then arrest them make them go for lesser charges because they planted in info. In your case. Seems like they left bread crumbs letting you know they were in there. That is what I got from the whistle blower. Now there are tapes from him that were turned over. I’m not sure if you know about it but read Linn Wood March 7th whistleblower transcript. It’s long BUT worth the read. This story is getting NO TRACTION WHAT SO EVER. I know our media won’t cover it. Social media won’t. But, we need to get these stories to the people. Linn has risked his life getting this out and so has the whistle blower. They have tried to kill him many times and his wife. I know you are in the story. I wouldn’t hurt to listen to the tapes. Good luck and God Bless you ???

  4. Even if Trump had demanded “find the fraud,” what’s the problem? Trump sincerely believed there was fraud and asked someone to find the fraud he believed was there. Shouldn’t that be a significant part of any election official’s job anyway?

And if that person did uncover significant fraud, that person would certainly be a hero to the 76 million voters who voted for Trump. So “be a national hero” part is accurate.
