On November 17, the Florida Legislature passed legislation that will protect unvaccinated workers from federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
The legislation, which included four separate bills, was approved during a special three-day legislative session convened by Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Florida).
DeSantis signed the four bills into law on November 18 and they became effective immediately.
Florida is the first state to put into law financial penalties for any business that requires proof of vaccination against Covid-19 as a condition of employment.
Small businesses with 99 employees or fewer will face $10,000 per employee violation. Medium to big businesses will face $50,000 per employee violation.
The bills stipulate that private businesses are not allowed to mandate Covid-19 vaccines, unless they offer workers the ability to opt out for medical reasons, religious beliefs, immunity from previous Covid-19 infection, regular testing, or an agreement to wear protective gear.
Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo will be in charge of determining the standards for the employee exemptions. Ladapo, like DeSantis also opposes vaccine mandates.
Another significant measure of this legislation prohibits Florida schools and government entities from issuing Covid-19 vaccine mandates.
School districts may not have mandatory school face mask policies, and they may not quarantine healthy students. Students and parents may also sue a school district if the district violates any of these policies.
At the bill signing, Gov. DeSantis said, โI told Floridians that we would protect their jobs and today we made that the law. Nobody should lose their job due to heavy-handed COVID mandates and we had a responsibility to protect the livelihoods of the people of Florida. Iโm thankful to the Florida Legislature for joining me in standing up for freedom.โ
The virus will continue doing what viruses doโmutate, so wouldnโt an effective treatment that keeps the small percentage of the population who are hospitalized out of the hospital be a betterโcheaperโcourse of action?
Up until now, science said mutations are weaker than the original. But in Clown world, mutations are stronger, and natural immunity is weaker than Vax.
Although I am very encouraged by Governor DeSantis's fight against federal totalitarianism, I think this is the wrong reaction. Block any penalties from Washington, no argument there. It's immoral to force employers to require vaxxed employees, to penalize them with BS fees if they don't comply... however I don't agree that the govt should penalize employers who require the vaccine. It's their private property, with scores of legally-mandated employee safety responsibilities... so much so, they may well have an exaggerated sense of what they must do to provide a safe working space. Personally I can't accept OSHA being used as an excuse to protect people from things outside the workplace. So let private property owners decide, leave room for discussion of concerns, ditch this one size fits all silliness.
Is it really a good Bill if one person, the Florida Surgeon General, sets the โstandardsโ for opt out exemptions? How about zero mandates and nobody needs to ask for any type of exemption!?
Exactly - zero mandates, no exemptions, no testing, no protective gear (which is useless). Medical procedures are up to the individual period! No company should be able to force employees to get any kind of medical procedure. Masks are useless against a virus particle that is 0.1 Microns = 1/1000th of a hair, pores of the masks we use are 200-1000 times larger. No point in wearing it.
