A female official with the governing body for competitive swimming in the U.S., USA Swimming, has resigned in protest of men being allowed to compete on women’s swim teams.
Cynthia Millen’s December 17 resignation letter is published in Swimming World Magazine.
I told my fellow officials that I can no longer participate in a sport which allows biological men to compete against women.

“Everything fair about swimming is being destroyed,” wrote Millen in her letter.
The letter is, in part, a response to the case of Will Thomas. Thomas, 22, swam on men’s teams before changing his name to Lia Thomas, taking male hormone suppression therapy, and being allowed to compete on the women’s swim team at the University of Pennsylvania where he has been shattering numerous women’s records.
The issue of men competing as women has divided activists.
Some say men have the unrestricted right to seek athletic opportunities as women if they choose to identify as a woman. Others say the men should be allowed to compete alongside and against women if they meet a particular medical threshold to suppress their male attributes and physical advantages.
But many feminists and women’s rights advocates who support transgender and gay rights are opposed to men competing on women’s teams, saying it cheats women out of their opportunities. They say no amount of hormone suppression or surgery erases the natural advantages males have in the athletic realm.
