The following is an excerpt from The Sacramento Bee.

GEICO has closed all of its 38 California agent offices that sell auto and homeowners policies and other lines and has also ended the practice of selling insurance through telephone agents in the state.

Three offices in Sacramento, one in Roseville, three in Fresno and one in Modesto were among offices that have closed in the last few days. The closures are resulting in more than 35 layoffs in the Sacramento area and hundreds statewide.

The California Department of Insurance is following GEICO’s actions, said California Deputy Insurance Commissioner Michael Soller. “We are monitoring to make sure consumers are protected,” he said in a statement.

A GEICO spokesperson would not comment on the new changes but said the company was not leaving California. “We continue to write policies in California, and we remain available through our direct channels for the more than 2.18 million California customers presently insured with us,” the company said in an unsigned emailed statement to The Sacramento Bee.

The changes leave online options through a computer or a mobile device as the only way to obtain a GEICO policy in California.

GEICO’s actions in California come as company commissioned Walk-In agents and phone sales remain open in other western states.

GEICO is also advertising on its website for a new sales agent at an office in Naples, Florida. It’s unclear if GEICO is losing money in California and the moves are part of a strategy to reduce business.

GEICO is part of Berkshire Hathaway, the publicly traded company run by famed investor Warren Buffett.

  1. Would be fascinating to know the real reasons. My gut says this is an interesting story that is rooted in the current Culture War. My gut says California Woke laws and regulations are negatively affecting business.

  2. Since being called a facsist by my liberal debate friend, I’ve been looking at words very carefully. From my Funk & Wagnalls 1963 Standard College Dictionary, I came up with an apt description of the libs. They say they’re “socialists”, but this administration has gone way beyond that, in my opinion, with a total lack of respect for the Constitution/Bill of Rights laws that made this country great. Marx was the commie daddy, but (from F&W ) “As developed by Lenin and others, it advocates seizure of power by a conspiratorial political party, maintenance of power during an interim period by stern suppression of internal opposition, centralized public ownership of almost all productive property and the sharing of the products of labor, and commitment to the ultimate goal of a world-wide communist state.” I think they’ve gotten almost everything but property rights sewn up, don’t you? It’s pretty obvious why they hate Donald Trump, isn’t it? I hope we have the guts to take em down and that’s why I’ll be eternally grateful to people like Sharyl!
