The following is an excerpt from a Medpage article.
The FDA has approved Neffy, the first non-injectable epinephrine nasal spray for emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in patients weighing at least 66 pounds. This needle-free option could help overcome treatment delays caused by fear of injections.
Kelly Stone, MD, PhD, of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, emphasized that Neffy addresses an unmet need by providing a new, accessible treatment option for anaphylaxis. ARS Pharmaceuticals, the product’s manufacturer, plans to offer the spray at $25 for insured patients, with a cash price of $199 for two doses.
The FDA’s approval was based on studies showing that Neffy achieves comparable epinephrine levels to those from injectable products. However, individuals with certain nasal conditions should use it cautiously.
Reported side effects include throat irritation, headache, and nasal discomfort. ARS Pharmaceuticals is also working on making Neffy available for younger children in the future.
