(WATCH) October 7th

This week is the one-year anniversary of the devastating attack on Israel by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas. And with that, a major escalation, missile attacks by Iran and Israeli ground forces opening a new front against terrorists in neighboring Lebanon. Scott Thuman reports.

The following is a transcript of a report from “Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson.”

The warnings sounded all across Israel as nearly two hundred Iranian ballistic missiles streaked in. Within minutes, interceptor missiles fired from the ground and from U.S. Navy destroyers managed to blunt most of the attack.

While Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a forceful response.

Netanyahu: Iran made a big mistake tonight, and it will pay for it.

From the Situation Room at the White House, President Biden and Vice President Harris authorized US forces to help defend Israel.

And former President Trump warned of what he called a “global catastrophe.”

President Trump: As you know, the world right now is spiraling out of control. I’ve been talking about World War Three for a long time.

This latest barrage triggered by Israel’s new ground offensive in southern Lebanon. Going after Iran’s most important proxy: the terrorist group Hezbollah, whose leader was recently killed in a suspected Israeli-targeted strike.

All of this as Israel marks one year since an attack by another Iranian-sponsored Islamic terrorist group Hamas that changed the nation forever.

It was early in the morning, Oct 7th, that thousands of Islamic terrorist fighters from Hamas began entering Israel from Gaza, surprising small towns, farms, and a music festival. They killed nearly twelve hundred soldiers and civilians and took 251 people, including at least a dozen Americans, hostage.

Zohar Palti is the former head of intelligence for the Mossad, Israel’s CIA.

Scott: How do you think October 7th will change the Israeli views of Iran?

Zohar Palti: The Iranian regime in the last 40 years is declaring two things. First of all, that they want to get a military nuclear bomb. They’re not saying the military, but obviously, it’s going there. And the secondly loud and clearly, they’re saying we want to eliminate the states of Israel. It’s the only country in the world that declares that they want to eliminate another state.

After the October 7th attack, Israel declared war on Hamas, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found, at least at first, strong support from the White House and other capitals.

President Biden: We stand with Israel.

Democratic Congressman Jim Costa and Republican Congresswoman Young Kim are both from California, both on the House Foreign Affairs Committee; we asked them to reflect on this past year.

Rep. Kim: What happens over there, thousands of miles away, it’s not just an over there issue, it’s very much here and now issue that affects our livelihood.

Rep. Costa: There still is a significant bipartisan support on Israel’s right to defend itself. Support for release of the hostages and ceasefire.

But within days of the October 7th attack, the sense of collective outrage that brought people together started to unravel.

Thousands of troops backed by tanks and aircraft entered Gaza. Civilian casualties quickly mounted, and here in the US, protests in support of the Palestinians rocked college campuses and cities from New York to Los Angeles.

Congress called in college presidents to address antisemitic attacks.

Rep. Stefanik: And Dr. Gay, at Harvard, does calling for the genocide of jews violate Harvard’s rules on bullying and harassment, yes or no?

Dr: Gay: It can be, depending on the context.

The presidents of Harvard, Colombia, and the University of Pennsylvania all resigned at least in part for their handling of protests.

After a year of differential response from the United Nations, this week, Israel barred the UN Secretary-General from the country for failing to condemn Iran for the missile attack.

With Israel now hitting Iranian-backed groups on two fronts, Palti believes his nation faces a crucial decision over targeting Iran directly.

Palti: Israel will come to a junction right now that if it continues like that with the Hamas, with Hezbollah and things like that, we’ll have to take a really serious decision. Whether or not to go to the head of the octopus and not to deal with all of the other ones.

So, on the anniversary of the Hamas attack, the question hanging is where and how large Israel’s next move will be.

For Full Measure, I’m Scott Thuman in Washington.
