Mexico braces for mass deportations as Trump reclaims White House

The following information is from Border Report.

Officials in Baja California anticipate a significant increase in deportations from the US once Donald Trump returns to office, aligning with his campaign promises to deport large numbers of migrants.

“Every time there are changes in the United States, it directly impacts us, especially when people are being returned. Some will go directly back to their countries, others will arrive in Mexico depending on agreements made with each country, but we are getting ready for elevated returns”

– Jorge Rivera Manzo, Director of Migrant Affairs, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico

Currently, shelters in Tijuana and Mexicali report relatively low occupancy, with 60% vacancy in Tijuana and 70% in Mexicali. However, José María García Lara, head of the Movimiento Juventud 2000 shelter, voiced concerns about an expected influx of deportees.

One migrant, Emir Garcia, expressed hope that Trump might consider supporting migrants, but others, like Lucia Chique, expect tougher policies, fearing an end to programs like the CBP One app, which currently helps migrants secure lawful asylum appointments.

Jesús Ramos, another migrant staying in a shelter, stated that if the app is discontinued, many, including himself, are prepared to use smugglers to reach the US, saying, “I’m going to cross regardless, even if I have to use a coyote (smuggler).”
