A peer-reviewed study published in Nature reveals that high-fructose corn syrup, a common ingredient in processed foods and drinks, accelerates the growth of cancerous tumors. Researchers found that the sweetener, even in modest amounts, promotes tumor growth by altering the metabolic pathways of cancer cells, effectively doubling growth rates in some cases.

The study highlights how high-fructose corn syrup accelerates cancer growth. Researchers found that fructose does not feed tumor cells directly but is converted by the liver into lipids that tumors use to grow. The process relies on the creation of lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs), which are essential for the formation of tumor cell membranes.

Gary Patti, Ph.D., a professor of genetics and medicine at Washington University and the study’s lead author, explained how fructose impacts cancer cells.

“The liver transforms fructose into other nutrients that drive tumor growth indirectly.

In some cases, the growth rate of the tumors accelerated by two-fold or even higher … Eating a lot of fructose was clearly very bad for the progression of these tumors.”

The researchers also observed that the impact of dietary fructose on cancer is not limited to its direct conversion in the liver. Using advanced metabolomics techniques, the team identified elevated levels of LPCs in the blood of mice consuming high-fructose diets. These findings underscore the significant role that fructose plays in fueling tumor development across multiple cancer types, including melanoma, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.

High-fructose corn syrup is pervasive in processed foods like soda, salad dressing, and spaghetti sauce, making it nearly impossible to avoid. The average US adult consumes 44 pounds of fructose annually, with adolescents consuming even more.

Federal subsidies keep high-fructose corn syrup cheap for manufacturers, driving its widespread use in processed foods. Critics argue that these policies prioritize industry profits over public health, allowing harmful additives to dominate the food supply.

Most of the folks who pay attention to High Fructose have already realized the general harm it can do to us, but sprinkle a cancer warning in and you might have a recipe for change….
