(STUDY) Ozempic linked to blindness as Novo Nordisk downplays risks

The following information is from Children’s Health Defense.

A new study has linked the diabetes and weight-loss drug Ozempic to an increased risk of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition that causes sudden vision loss due to reduced blood flow to the optic nerve. Researchers examined over 60,000 Ozempic users in Denmark and Norway and identified 32 cases of NAION. The study found Ozempic users were more than twice as likely to develop the condition compared to those on SGLT-2 inhibitors, an older class of diabetes medications.

NAION, the second most common form of optic nerve damage after glaucoma, has no effective treatment. Harvard researchers identified a stronger association in their study, reporting that people with diabetes were more than four times more likely to be diagnosed with NAION if they were taking semaglutide. Those who were overweight or obese were more than seven times more likely to experience the condition when using the drug.

The findings add vision loss to the growing list of serious side effects linked to Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs, which include vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, stomach paralysis, kidney disease, and thyroid cancer. These drugs pose such significant risks to pregnant women that some doctors advocate for black box warnings on their labels.

Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, downplayed the findings, claiming the benefit-risk profile remains favorable. The company stated that their internal studies found “no imbalance disfavoring” the medication.

Despite the company’s reassurances, Novo Nordisk’s stock dropped 5.4% following the study’s publication. Critics argue that the responses from Novo Nordisk fail to address growing safety concerns. Experts emphasize the need for more transparency and further research to assess causality and fully understand the risks posed by semaglutide.

  1. I’m beginning to think no drug developed is safe anymore. When the CDC and other departments within the government are run by ex-ceo’s from drug companies that becomes a major conflict of interest. Drugs are prescribed by doctors as a fix all and why not? They get a slice of the pie for prescribing that particular drug.
Americans are being drugged and they are not even aware what is being done. Doctor says you need this and here is the prescription. Maybe time to say no, maybe time to ask why, maybe time to change a lifestyle. Maybe a healthy lifestyle is your best choice?
