The following is from Gallup News.
A Gallup poll shows that 34% of Americans say they are satisfied with the way democracy is functioning in the US, a notable improvement from the record-low 28% reported in December 2023. This rise in optimism follows Republican victories in the 2024 elections and Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. However, 61% still say they feel dissatisfied, reflecting ongoing concerns among many Americans.

Republicans say they are more confident in the state of democracy compared to a year ago, with their confidence nearly doubling from 17% in December 2023 to 33%. Democrats report 35% confidence, a slight dip from 38% the previous year. Independents also express improved optimism, with 34% now saying they are confident, up from 27% in 2023.
The poll highlights significant recovery among Americans with lower education levels. Those with a high school education or less now report 34% satisfaction with democracy, a substantial rebound from 21% in 2023. This improvement has narrowed the gap between different educational groups, as confidence among those holding postgraduate degrees remains steady.
Although current confidence levels are still lower than the peaks of the 1980s and 1990s, Gallup’s findings suggest a growing sense of optimism about democracy in 2024.
The survey was conducted from December 2-18, 2024.
