(WATCH) Trump vows to reinstate unvaccinated military members

In his inaugural address, President Donald Trump pledged to reinstate military members dismissed due to refusing the Covid-19 vaccine, offering them back pay. Trump described their removal as “unjustly expelled” and announced plans to sign an executive order ensuring their reinstatement.

The move comes as questions arise about how broadly the executive order will apply. Some estimates indicate that while 8,400 service members were formally dismissed, up to 100,000 may have left due to coercion, early retirement, or other pressures related to the vaccine mandate.

Many service members faced intense pressure during the mandate, with some coerced into taking the vaccine against their will. Reports of bullying and moral injury were widespread, leaving lasting impacts on those who felt forced to choose between their convictions and their careers. Trump’s pledge seeks to address these grievances, but questions remain about how broadly it will apply and whether compensation will extend to those who were coerced but remained in service.

Trump’s commitment addresses what he called an unlawful mandate that deprived service members of their rights and violated the military’s moral and legal standards. The newly confirmed Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, is expected to oversee the implementation of this order.
