IG unearths $47 billion in waste of our tax money; the Panama Canal factor; US boon in European energy

Americans spent more than 143 billion tax dollars to rebuild Afghanistan as the US war against Islamic extremist terrorists was waged for 20 years. A third of our money was lost to waste, fraud, or abuse. That’s according to Inspector General John Sopko.

Sunday on Full Measure, we’ll speak with Sopko about the $47 billion in misspending his audits and investigations uncovered.

Something surprising happened after my interview with him. He became one of 17 Inspectors Generals on the chopping block of the new Trump administration.

A surprising move perhaps against a fierce auditor labelled by his detractors as “the Donald Trump of IGs.”

Don’t miss our fascinating look at his work and some of the biggest scandals he unearthed.

Also Sunday, Scott Thuman reports from Panama to explain why the Panama Canal has become a flashpoint in a new international discussion.

President Trump says Panama isn’t living up to its bargain and it’s posing a threat to our national and economic security.

And when Russia invaded Ukraine, it set off an energy crisis in Europe.

Among the beneficiaries?

US companies.

I’ll report from Poland.

See you Sunday!

  1. Re: “…Something surprising happened after my interview with him. Question: Since A.I. is a binary construct (either/or) it will not exercise a form of human wisdom that is needed when assessing the pros and cons of a departments functions, much less the grey areas when measuring an individual’s overall performance. This problem didn’t begin with the advancement of A.I. computing schedules either; the entirety of the twentieth century industrial age begins with the reckoning that there is a battle between man and machine that we must confront. Thank God for the artists-writers-poets-film makers who have been showing us what is at stake. I recommend Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” for immediate review before the mass culling rituals (also on vivid display as CV Vaxx mandates) get too far out of hand! Human’s still need to call the shots whether Elon’s youthful tech posse is aware of this notable element or not.

  2. SIG for Afghanistan Sopko was at odds with the Trump administration in 2019 for the once public information now made more secretive. He was at odds with the Department of State and U.S. AID who were uncooperative in providing information necessary for SIGAR’s investigation. This refusal hindered his ability to track how funds were being used. In the Hearing : Before the Committee on Oversight and Accountibility. U.S. House of representatives. 19 April 2023.
