A new Rasmussen Reports poll finds that 50% of likely US voters say they rate President Donald Trump’s leadership as good or excellent, while 37% say they consider his leadership poor. This marks a significant improvement from early 2017, when only 38% said they rated his leadership as good or excellent.
By a six-point margin, more voters say they think Trump’s leadership style has improved rather than worsened. 43% say they believe his leadership has gotten better since his first term, while 37% say they think it has gotten worse. Another 17% say they believe it has remained about the same.
Although Trump is still widely seen as confrontational, fewer voters hold that view now than in the past. Forty-one percent (41%) say they consider his leadership style too confrontational, down from 57% in early 2017. Meanwhile, 44% say they believe his approach is about right, and 9% say they think he is too cooperative.
Among voters who say they rate Trump’s leadership as excellent, 70% say they believe his leadership style has improved since his first term.
Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Republicans, 22% of Democrats, and 40% of unaffiliated voters say they think Trump’s leadership style has gotten better. Meanwhile, 59% of Democrats, 12% of Republicans, and 38% of unaffiliated voters say they believe it has gotten worse.
Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans, 26% of Democrats, and 46% of unaffiliated voters say they rate Trump’s leadership as good or excellent. In contrast, 62% of Democrats, 11% of Republicans, and 38% of unaffiliated voters say they consider his leadership poor.
Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats, 18% of Republicans, and 41% of unaffiliated voters say they view Trump’s leadership style as too confrontational. Meanwhile, 68% of Republicans, 22% of Democrats, and 42% of unaffiliated voters say they believe his leadership style is about right.
The survey of 1,196 likely U.S. voters was conducted on February 6 and 9-10, 2025, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.

Trump’s leadership style may not have changed much, rather his ability to choose his cabinet is making a YUGE difference. He now understands the DC cesspool much better and knowing this is his final 4 years is more relaxed and confident in his actions.
