The second of two rounds of layoffs at Somerville, Massachusetts-based Mass General Brigham began March 10, with approximately 1,500 employees affected overall, according to The Boston Globe.
CEO Anne Klibanski, MD, informed employees in a March 10 letter that all notifications would occur this week. Affected workers will receive benefits coverage and severance packages.
Dr. Klibanski attributed the layoffs to financial difficulties and the need for long-term stability, explaining that leaders across the system carefully assessed the situation before making this decision.
This decision was reached by clinical, academic and administrative leaders from across our system after thoughtfully considering the current healthcare landscape and our poor financial performance over the past several years. As we look to the future, we will continue to build a culture of resource stewardship and financial sustainability that enables us to withstand the unrelenting pressures facing healthcare systems everywhere.
