The following is from Rep. Katrina Pierson’s office.
Representative Katrina Pierson has introduced HB-3971, a bill aimed at transforming the Texas Sunset Commission into the Department of Government Oversight & Efficiency (DOGE). The newly proposed Texas DOGE would mirror the success of Elon Musk’s national oversight team, which has been instrumental in exposing federal wasteful spending, while ensuring findings are directly reported to the Texas Legislature.
“Given the unprecedented waste uncovered at the federal level by Elon Musk and his DOGE team, I believe Texas has an opportunity to lead by example,” said Rep. Pierson. “My DOGE bill ensures we have our own dedicated organization to investigate inefficiencies within state bureaucracy. By implementing our own DOGE program, we are taking a proactive step to strengthen transparency in public spending and save taxpayer dollars.”
The proposed Texas DOGE will assess state agency performance, financial practices, and operational efficiency to reduce state spending and eliminate waste. Additionally, all state agencies headquartered in or near Austin will undergo evaluations to determine if relocation could yield cost savings.
Rep. Pierson emphasized that the legislation aligns with Texas’ commitment to fiscal responsibility.
“Texans are being taxed out of their homes, any penny of government waste needs to be discovered and put back into the pockets of taxpayers. By forming our own DOGE, we can more effectively root out unnecessary costs while championing innovation and best practices in government.”
