CDC warns of deadly Listeria outbreak linked to chicken Alfredo

The following is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC has issued a food safety alert regarding a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to FreshRealm chicken fettuccine alfredo meals.

As of June 18, 2025, a total of 17 people across 13 states have been infected with the same strain of Listeria. Sixteen have been hospitalized, and three deaths have been reported—from Illinois, Michigan, and Texas. The outbreak also caused one pregnancy-associated illness resulting in a fetal loss.

Illnesses began as early as July 24, 2024, and the most recent known case occurred on May 10, 2025.

Recalled Products:

FreshRealm recalled its chicken fettuccine alfredo meals on June 17, 2025.
These products were sold in Kroger and Walmart stores, under the Marketside and Home Chef brand names. They were sold in refrigerated sections only, not frozen.

What You Should Do:

  • Do not eat the recalled meals. Throw them away or return them.
  • Clean your refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the recalled foods—Listeria can survive refrigeration and spread easily.
  • Call your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms after consuming the recalled meals.

Who Is Most at Risk:

  • Adults 65 and older
  • Pregnant women
  • People with weakened immune systems

Possible Symptoms:

Symptoms typically begin within 2 weeks but can appear the same day or up to 10 weeks later.

  • Pregnant women may experience fever, muscle aches, tiredness—and face risks of miscarriage, premature birth, or severe newborn infection.
  • Others may experience fever, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
  • Invasive listeriosis is often severe, sometimes fatal.
