FDA Commissioner Marty Makary says the agency will begin consolidating operations to reduce inefficiencies and improve performance across departments.
In an internal email sent to staff on June 11, Makary announced a plan to centralize major administrative functions—including human resources, acquisitions, budgeting, FOIA requests, and communications. He described the move as a way to eliminate duplicative services and help the agency focus more directly on its mission.
Makary also emphasized that these changes come in the context of recent layoffs and broader federal downsizing efforts. He acknowledged the uncertainty this may cause but encouraged staff to remain open-minded, calling it an opportunity to improve how the FDA serves the public.
Some FDA experts will be temporarily reassigned to help assess and guide the restructuring, but no final decisions have been made. Any structural changes, he said, would include internal review and congressional oversight.
Makary said the goal is to restore public trust in the agency through “radical transparency, gold-standard science, judicious operational management, and common sense.”
