FDA recall adds to pattern of cholesterol drug safety issues

The following is from Epoch Times – Epoch Health.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall of tens of thousands of bottles of a medication prescribed to treat high cholesterol.

According to a recent FDA enforcement report, more than 57,504 bottles of pitavastatin were recalled due to impurity and degradation issues. The drug, a statin used to lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk, was found to be out of specification for quality and stability.

The tablets were manufactured in Taiwan by Orient Pharma Co., Ltd. and distributed in the United States by Teva Pharmaceuticals. The recall applies to 90-count bottles of the 2mg dose and includes three separate batches.

Pitavastatin is sold under the brand names Livalo and Zypitamag. The FDA categorized the event as a Class III recall, meaning it’s not likely to cause major health problems, but still fails federal standards.

This latest recall is part of a growing list of issues tied to cholesterol medications in recent months:

  • In March, 2,184 bottles of Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets were pulled from the market due to “failed dissolution specifications.”
  • In May, 5,328 bottles of Livalo were recalled after reports of foreign tablets or capsules being found in the containers.

The recall comes after another company, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc., voluntarily recalled dozens of types of generic medications. According to an FDA enforcement report in April, the move followed regulator findings of problems in how medications were being manufactured at one of Glenmark’s facilities in India.

  1. I had a neighbor who didn’t look well. He said he had a kidney ailment . The doctors said they never seen it before. I said are you on a statin? He said yes. I said one of the statins’ mentions a side effect as a rare but fatal kidney ailment. They took him off the statin but it was too late he died. Check your statin information for side effects. If one of them says a rare but fatal kidney ailment get off it quickly.

  2. The way they target audiences with their ads is sickening. Allowing TV advertising has probably contributed greatly to the increase in costs (and use) of our sickcare system. Thank Heaven for the mute button during The Open last weekend.

  3. HI Sharyl,
Unfortunately, I see everything through the prism of the covid vaccine debacle and I have to ask ‘how did we get here’. Radio and TV are saturated with Big Pharma ads promoting some new miracle drug or some e-d cure. I swear if the e-d problem had the magnitude we’re led to believe by all the ads, we would be hard pressed to find one single child in any American neighborhood today. If you really want to know how we got here, it’s called the Prep Act. I encourage you to read about it. Do a story on tv about it. You can find information about it here.
