Our granddaughter was given a very high and lengthy dose of doxycycline for a mild case of walking pneumonia. She developed a severe and very rare allergic reaction called intracranial hypertension. It took 3 very frustrating ER visits (bloodwork did show she was having some sort of allergic reaction) where they kept insisting she was having migraines and loaded her up with steroids and pain killers. All imaging tests were negative but by the time she FINALLY saw a neurologist her eyes were almost completely crossed. He immediately admitted her, did a couple of more test and finally she consented to a spinal tap. Liters of clear spinal fluid came gushing out! She had immediate relief, was put on medication for a few weeks and within a month was on a plane with us to Argentina. Yes, it absolutely was the antibiotic. Thank God she didn’t go blind or worse, die! She is a a beautiful healthy young woman, training for a marathon. Normally it is middle aged overweight women that might possibly have this rare reaction. The steroids made it much worse!
I enjoy your podcasts Sharyl, they are always worth a listen and this entry is no exception. I listen while driving, on the bus, in the garage, whenever. You are a hard worker obviously and in my opinion amongst our nation’s top journalists and I am thankful for you being there and doing what you do. Your substantial body of work is meaningful and above all, reliable. Thank you.
It’s a shame that Sharyl does these outdated voice-casts. I would like to read the content, but don’t want to listen to these lengthy editorials – too much time.
Sharyl, how can I get a transcript of this podcast?
I am a retired RN and knew many of these side effects but you opened a new window! I would love to be able to give a transcript to many non-believers who would not otherwise agree to listen to a podcast.
Thanks so much your research and informative reporting. Sandy
