The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that about 2 million illegal immigrants have left the US since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Just the News that about 400,000 individuals were directly deported by federal agencies, while another 1.6 million self-deported over the past 240 days.

“We’re looking at about 2 million total in the past 240 days,” McLaughlin said. “That includes 1.6 million self-deportations, which we are very much encouraging illegal aliens to take. It’s a lot safer for the aliens themselves, for the public, for our law enforcement, and also it’s a lot better financially, a lot more tax savings for the US taxpayer.”

McLaughlin’s remarks, set to air on the John Solomon Reports podcast, appear to confirm earlier reporting of roughly 350,000 deportations by late August and an independent analysis from the Center for Immigration Studies that found 1.6 million voluntary departures. DHS figures corroborated those estimates.

Trump has previously stated there are between 20 and 22 million illegal immigrants in the country, meaning about 10% have now been removed.

Notably, the 2 million figure has been achieved even while DHS is still operating under a budget approved during the Biden administration. It does not yet include the planned expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) resources under Trump’s so-called “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

McLaughlin expressed confidence that DHS will meet the administration’s goal of removing far more illegal immigrants by the end of Trump’s term, pointing to an expected surge in deportations and a steady flow of self-deportations.
