A new Gallup poll finds Americans’ trust in the mass media has dropped to just 28%, the lowest level since polling began in the 1970s. Confidence in newspapers, television, and radio has continued to decline, with only a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust expressed in the media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly.
This marks a decline from 31% last year and 40% five years ago. Seven in ten adults now say they have “not very much” (36%) or “none at all” (34%) confidence in the media to report news fairly and accurately.
When media trust was first measured in the 1970s, between 68% and 72% of Americans expressed confidence. By 1997, that had fallen to 53%, and it has not reached a majority since 2004. The highest point in the past decade was 45% in 2018, just two years after confidence collapsed during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The partisan breakdown shows historically low trust across the board:
- Republicans’ confidence has dropped to just 8%, the first single-digit reading in the survey’s history. GOP trust has not exceeded 21% since 2015.
- Independents show 27% confidence, matching last year’s record low. Independents have not reached a majority level of trust since 2003.
- Democrats remain the only group with a slim majority, at 51%. This ties their previous low, last seen in 2016.
