An overwhelming majority of respondents believe children should wait until their mid-teens to get their first cell phone.
That’s according to the latest unscientific poll at SharylAttkisson.com.
Eighty percent (80%) say a child should have their first cell phone between the ages of 14 and 17.
Sixteen percent (16%) say ages 11 to 13 are appropriate.
Just over two percent (2%) think children should get a phone before age 10, and fewer than two percent (<2%) say it doesn’t matter.
These results indicate strong public support for waiting until the teenage years before giving a child a cell phone.

Although I was a young father, my son was born in 1979, and my daughter a couple of years later. I still find it hard to believe I had a child in the Seventies, but I did. Anyway, I cannot imagine being a parent of young children in the year 2025, mainly due to cellphones and, obviously, the internet. So if you are a parent out there and you have a 9-year-old or even a 14-year-old, my thoughts are with you. I’m sure that it is very difficult these days to be in that position.
