The following is from MedPage Today.
A Florida congresswoman is facing serious federal charges over alleged Covid relief fraud.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Florida) was released on a $60,000 bond after being charged with stealing $5 million in federal funds tied to the pandemic.
Federal prosecutors say the funds were intended for Covid-19 vaccination outreach. Her family’s company, Trinity Healthcare Services, requested $50,000 under a federal contract but mistakenly received $5 million — and kept it. Within two months, over $100,000 allegedly went toward a 3-carat yellow diamond ring.
The charges include theft of government funds, straw donor contributions, false tax filings, money laundering, and related conspiracy counts.
Cherfilus-McCormick denies the charges and calls the indictment “politically timed and politically motivated.” She says she has no plans to resign and will continue representing Florida’s 20th District.
As part of her release conditions, she must surrender her personal passport and limit travel to certain locations related to her congressional duties.
