A new Rasmussen Reports survey shows impeachment remains a top issue heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Sixty-eight percent of Democrats say they would vote for congressional candidates who support impeaching President Donald Trump.

Overall, 78% of likely US voters say they believe Democrats will attempt to impeach Trump if they regain control of Congress. That includes 54% who say it’s “very likely.” Just 16% say it’s not likely.

When asked about their vote, 41% of voters say they would support a candidate who promises to back impeachment, while 43% would not and 16% are unsure. Among Republicans, 67% say they would not vote for a pro-impeachment candidate. Among unaffiliated voters, 34% say they would vote for a pro-impeachment candidate, 43% would not, and 23% are unsure.

The poll also asked voters to compare Trump’s second term to his first. Thirty-four percent say Trump’s current term is going better than his first, while 50% say it’s going worse and 13% say it’s about the same. A majority of Republicans, 59%, believe Trump’s second term is going better, while 76% of Democrats say it’s going worse. Among unaffiliated voters, 52% say Trump’s second term is going worse, 30% say it’s better, and 14% say it’s about the same.

Majorities across the political spectrum say it is very likely Democrats would push to impeach Trump if they win control of Congress. That includes 58% of Republicans, 55% of Democrats, and 50% of unaffiliated voters.

The survey also found that most voters say the economy has worsened over the past year, and fewer are giving Trump high marks for his handling of the economy. While Trump has twice won the presidency under the “Make America Great Again” slogan, most voters now say they prefer traditional Republicans over MAGA-branded candidates.

The survey was conducted December 21-23, 2025, among 1,099 likely US voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
