The following is from the Border Report.
Texas officials say the state has completed its border wall project and will not build additional segments.
The project, part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, resulted in about 82.2 miles of steel border wall along South Texas at a cost of more than $3 billion.
“We are right at the end of this journey,” said William McKerrall of the Texas Facilities Commission, which oversaw construction.
Officials said crews are wrapping up final work in Zapata County before leaving the project entirely.
The state had originally planned more than 800 miles of wall, but additional funding was pulled back after federal funding was approved for border wall construction.
The wall includes noncontiguous segments across multiple counties, with gaps in between. Abbott has said the effort helped reduce illegal crossings and drug trafficking.
At the pace of construction, estimates suggested the full project could have taken decades and cost tens of billions of dollars.
