Texas women accused of smuggling migrants hidden in trash bags

The following is from the Border Report.

Two Texas women are facing federal charges after authorities say they tried to smuggle migrants into the US by hiding them inside trash bags in an SUV.

Prosecutors allege Gabriela Blanco Zavala and Michelle Corine Zavala used a supposed family trip to a dentist in Juarez, Mexico, as cover to bring two Mexican nationals across the border.

At the Paso del Norte Port of Entry in El Paso, the women presented valid identification and initially passed inspection. But a CBP officer noticed what appeared to be hair in the cargo area, leading to a search.

Authorities say two adult men were found hidden inside large trash bags. Officers also reported finding $14,235 in cash under the driver’s seat.

According to court records, Blanco allegedly admitted she was paid $4,500 for the smuggling attempt and said the cash was from prior trips. Zavala allegedly said she knew about the migrants and helped conceal them, and admitted to multiple smuggling trips since January.

A federal grand jury indicted both women on charges including conspiracy, transportation of illegal aliens, and bulk cash smuggling.
