A majority of likely US voters say they support limits on birthright citizenship following recent Supreme Court arguments on the issue, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week about President Donald Trump’s executive order denying birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants and temporary visitors to the US.
Fifty-nine percent (59%) of likely US voters say they support limiting automatic birthright citizenship to cases where at least one parent is a US citizen or legal permanent resident, including 39% who say they strongly support such limits. Thirty-four percent (34%) say they are opposed, including 23% who say they strongly oppose the change.
Support for limiting birthright citizenship spans the political spectrum. Sixty-one percent (61%) of Republicans, 62% of Democrats, and 54% of voters not affiliated with either major party say they at least somewhat support such limits.
Voters are more divided on whether illegal immigrants with American-born children should be exempt from deportation. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say they support such an exemption, while 42% say they oppose it and 19% say they are not sure.
However, there is broader agreement on exemptions tied to military service. Sixty-nine percent (69%) say illegal immigrants brought to the US as children should be exempt from deportation if they have served honorably in the US armed forces, while 19% say they oppose such an exemption.
The survey of 1,054 likely US voters was conducted April 1–2 and 5, 2026. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
