Americans’ views of the nation’s moral values have worsened over the past year, with a record share now rating them as poor, according to Gallup News.
A record-high 56% of Americans rate moral values in the US as poor, up 12 percentage points from last year. Just 3% rate moral values as excellent, 9% as good, and 30% as only fair.
Americans are also increasingly pessimistic about the direction of the country’s moral values. Eighty percent (80%) say moral values are getting worse, while 15% say they are getting better.
Gallup found that 69% believe government policies have a significant effect on people’s moral values. However, Americans are divided on what role government should play. Half, 50%, say the government should not be involved in promoting moral values, while 45% say it should.
Majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents now rate the nation’s moral values as poor. Republicans are the most likely to say government policies significantly affect moral values, while Democrats are the most likely to oppose government involvement in promoting them.
The findings are based on Gallup polling conducted May 1-17, 2026.

The nation was founded on Christian, moral principles by Christian, moral men. The problem lies in the fact that as a whole we are (sadly) no longer a Christian, moral people. Our founding document clearly stated our rights come from our Creator, not from any man and the role of government was clearly defined: “To secure these rights, governments are instituted among men.” How can a nation founded on Christian principles survive being a population of non Christian people? Our “enemies” figured out that, if the belief in God is purged, the nation founded on the idea of rights coming from God will fall. Dilute the population of believers with 30 million non believers and we’re well on our way to falling. Assassinating Charlie Kirk was a keystone in destroying the nation. As President Lincoln said, A house divided against itself cannot stand. Pray for our Republic.
It comes as no surprise. Moral decline is increasing as a rate thats hard to comprehend?
Question is why? I have my opinions buy will it make any difference?
I think not. We are living in the end times. If your a religious person and read the Bible you know the signs. They are all around us. Expect things to get worse – not better.
Not only have morals declined, but so has intelligence.
