The US attorney for the Central District of California says multiple election fraud investigations are underway in coordination with the FBI.
US Attorney Bill Essayli announced Friday that his office is also working with Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, on what he described as a comprehensive audit of California’s voter rolls.
Essayli did not discuss any specific investigations but said his office will pursue evidence of election law violations wherever it leads.
“The state has stonewalled every effort to verify that only eligible US citizens are registered to vote.”
Essayli pointed to the case of Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, who pleaded guilty to a felony count of paying another person to register to vote in a federal election.
According to prosecutors, Armstrong paid homeless individuals on Los Angeles’ Skid Row to register to vote and, in some cases, used her address so mail-in ballots would be sent to her home. Authorities say the scheme operated for roughly 20 years.
Essayli told the California Post that additional fraud could have been prevented if state officials had shared voter roll records with federal investigators. A lawsuit over access to the voter rolls is currently before the Ninth Circuit.
The announcement comes as California continues counting ballots from recent state and local elections.
