(POLL) Nearly half favor online hate speech crackdown

The following is from Rasmussen Reports.

Nearly half of voters say the federal government should take action to suppress hate speech on the internet, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

Forty-nine percent (49%) of likely US voters say they support federal government action to suppress online hate speech, up from 41% in 2022. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say they oppose such action, while 22% are not sure.

The survey found broad concern about the issue. Seventy-nine percent (79%) say hate speech on the internet is a serious problem, including 50% who say it is a very serious problem. Just 15% say it is not a serious problem.

Seventy-seven percent (77%) say online hate speech contributes to violence against women and minorities, including 46% who say it contributes a lot. Fifteen percent (15%) say they do not believe online hate speech contributes to such violence.

Views vary by party. Sixty-two percent (62%) of Democrats support government action to suppress online hate speech, compared to 44% of Republicans and 40% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

The survey of 1,073 likely US voters was conducted May 21 and 24-25, 2026. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

  1. Restricting free speech, hate or otherwise, is just another lurch towards fascism. Just look at human history for the examples. Mass formation through fear is the vehicle to contour people to a political agenda. Modernity has made the plebes mentally and emotionally weak which in turn makes them very easy to manipulate and control. Read Matias Desmet’s book “The Psychology of Totalitarianism” and you will see how easy it is to mold people with false fears. “The Covid” pandemic” fear mongering being the latest illustration.

  2. SCOTUS has struggled to define “obscene” for decades. Is there a Miller test for hate speech? I am disgusted by what I see on social media, but I also am disgusted by censorship because in the end, who gets to choose what is hateful? Such a slippery slope when first we seek to censor. I’ll stick with my constitutional law professor’s remedy for bad speech–more good speech. We need a lot more good speech now.

  3. and just what is ‘hate speech,’ deary? (is belittling you by calling you deary hate speech?)

some people are triggered by simple blunt talk: calling a thing by its name. is that hate speech?

is disagreeing with someone’s opinion hate speech?

is complaining about black democrat street crime in harsh words hate speech? is a man who cries out while being stung all over by ants engaging in hate speech? is there a difference in those two scenarios?

is rightly or wrongly accusing a group of bad behavior hate speech?

when democrats lie through their teeth about conservatives, is this propaganda hate speech? when they accuse conservatives of their own wrongdoings, is that hate speech?

when democrats insist that we lie (girls do just fine in combat…boys can be girls…multiculturalism is our strength, etc) is that hate speech?

when leftists pretend to care about the truth, and use issues like this to censor us, is that hate speech?

when democrats exaggerate Founding Fathers’ foibles, is that hate speech?

is my utter hatred for those democrat cooties that crawled from the Devil’s bunghole causing me to engage in hate speech? when I say I hate traitors and liars, is that hate speech?

when I ‘virtue signal’ good qualities I don’t really possess or endorse, is this deception hate speech?

this poll has no validity. the mudbrains are commenting on intellectual fog.

  4. Hi, Bob Mincer :

    “Hate Speech” is
—any word or combination of words
which evoke anxiety/discomfort in the listener,
as if being personally provoked to fight back with
words or actual physical retaliation; e.g., the “N”
word, which black hip-hop and gangsta-rap singers
may use vulgarly/readily/freely ( free speech ) and
WHITEY may NOT use ( no free speech, there )—NO
“equality under the rule of law” for the WHITE man
in this purportedly democratic republic (( read my
essays explaining how the white Founders’/Framers’
America has not been DEMOCRATIC from the time
Marxian Abe Lincoln ( correspondent with Karl Marx )
wared against Self-Government in the colonies ( those
so-called “Christians” had violated G_d’s commandment
not to KILL—Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown
being the most blood-thirsty among those “Christians” ).

Black African KINGS had started the slave-trade !, and
WHITE men had saved the lives of purchased black men,
because, otherwise, they would have been tortured then
murdered by those ever-warring tribal kings capturing
black enemies, to be sold ( Semitic Jews and Semitic Arabs
were the SLAVERS making great profit from that business ) :
