Report: Has TurboTax Tricked you?

If you make less than $66,000 a year, you can prep and file your taxes for free using commercial software on popular tax preparation sites.

But there's a good chance you didn't know that. You can thank some of the makers of tax preparation software for that.

These companies have spent millions lobbying in order to prevent the IRS from providing its own free, tax preparation software.

If you look hard enough, you might be able to find a "free file" option on websites like TurboTax, but it's not easy.

ProPublica investigated and walked through the maddening process of trying to use the "free" software option with TurboTax.

Did you know that if you make less than $66,000 a year, you can prepare and file your taxes for free?

No? That’s no accident. Companies that make tax preparation software, like Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, would rather you didn’t know.

Intuit and other tax software companies have spent millions lobbying to make sure that the IRS doesn’t offer its own tax preparation and filing service. In exchange, the companies have entered into an agreement with the IRS to offer a “Free File” product to most Americans — but good luck finding it.

...

Consumer groups have long argued that the IRS should offer its own free, online tax preparation and filing, as many other countries do.

But Congress is now moving to put the Free File program into law, including its restriction on the IRS creating its own free service. We wrote about that earlier this month and the opposition to this provision by freshman Democratic Reps. Katie Hill, Katie Porter, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others. The House ultimately passed the bipartisan Taxpayer First Act, which also contains some provisions that consumer advocates support, such as restrictions on private debt collection of unpaid taxes.

Now the Senate is considering the bill. Its sponsors have argued that it doesn’t tie the IRS’ hands, but outside legal experts we’ve spoken to disagree. The text in the bill codifying the Free File program has long been sought by lobbyists for Intuit. (continued)

You can find out more about this and where to find the "free file" options here: Here’s How TurboTax Just Tricked You Into Paying to File Your Taxes

Bundles of Money for Democratic Presidential Hopefuls

No matter what side of the political aisle you're on, you can always count on politicians to bring in the big bucks. Well, at least for themselves.

Democratic campaigns tend to emphasize small donors - a little money here, a little money there - but in the end, as all campaigns do, they need more than just a few small donations.

That's where bundlers come in: incredibly wealthy and well-connected political fundraisers who eventually hand in a few hundred thousand dollars each.

In an investigation for the Center for Public Integrity entitled:
MUM’S THE WORD: SOME DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS WON’T DISCUSS THEIR BIG-DOLLAR ‘BUNDLERS, Dave Levinthal examines the 2020 presidential candidates' bundling practices so far. The following is an excerpt.

...most Democratic presidential candidates running today say they want to limit the influence of money in politics. Many tout their rejection of contributions from corporate political action committees. Other scourges include “dark money” — secret political cash that can’t be traced to a root source — and super PACs, which are political committees that may raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to advocate for or against  candidates.

In the past, many presidential candidates, including Republicans George W. Bush and John McCain and Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, voluntarily revealed at least some bundlers. And earlier this month, 16 organizations of varying political ideologies jointly demanded presidential candidates release bundler information.

The Center for Public Integrity asked all major 2020 presidential candidates the same questions about their bundlers:

  • Do you plan to publicly disclose the identities of all campaign bundlers?
  • If so, how frequently will you disclose them, and what details will you provide about the money they bundle?

Answers varied greatly. (Continued)

You can read more about these bundlers (and who uses them) here: Mum’s the word: Some Democratic presidential hopefuls won’t discuss their big-dollar ‘bundlers’

Exclusive: "Media Trust" poll by Full Measure and ScottRasmussen.com

Democrats and Republicans alike report great skepticism when it comes to national political reporters, the content they report and their motivations.

Those are the results from a new "Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson" poll conducted by ScottRasmussen.com. It examined American voters' trust in the media.

Sixty-six percent (66%) of voters say national national political reporters often get important aspects of the story wrong.

Here are a couple of other questions and the results:

Do national political reporters accurately report what happened or promote their agenda?

78%: Promote their agenda

14%: Report what happened

If a national political reporter found out something that would hurt their favorite candidate, would they report it?

36%: Would report it

Trust in media about the same as Wikipedia: Results of an exclusive Full Measure poll

A new poll conducted by ScottRasmussen.com for Full Measure shows just how much trust in the national media has declined in recent years--particularly when it comes to political reporting.

More American voters believe national political news coverage is "inaccurate and unreliable" than "accurate and reliable" (43% to 38%).

That's a margin that's similar to marks given to Wikipedia for credibility (or lack thereof).

By a margin of 57% to 26% respondents said national political reporters use their position to advance an agenda rather than report the facts.

And overwhelmingly, those answering the poll said matters have grown worse over the past five years.

Read the poll results below and watch our story about it now at Full Measure.

The lesson of Mueller: An innocent man's defense can look like a guilty man's obstruction: Opinion

Now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia collusion and interference in the 2016 election has concluded, there are new questions about alleged obstruction.

Were President Trump's actions obstructive in nature? Or the justified protestations of an innocent man?

The following is an excerpt of an article by John Solomon in The Hill.

Thousands of interviews and hundreds of subpoenas later, special counsel Robert Mueller broke his two-year Wizard of Oz-like silence on Thursday in the form of a 448-page report that formally dropped the curtain on the bad political musical we’ve come to know as the Russian collusion scandal.

Let the record reflect that Mueller wasted little time debunking the feigned electoral love affair between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump that so many Democrats and their allies in the news media sang to life.

With little equivocation, the prosecutor declared that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election, including by hacking presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Democratic National Committee documents, but there was no evidence, none, that the president or his campaign — or any American, for that matter — engaged in the conspiracy.

To The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC and other media outlets that fanned the Russia collusion narrative — and to congressional Democrats such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) who insisted there was secret evidence to support it — I refer you to this declaration in Mueller’s report:

“In sum, the investigation established multiple links between Trump Campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russia government. Those links included Russian offers of assistance to the Campaign. In some instances the Campaign was receptive to the offers, while in other instances the Campaign officials shied away. Ultimately, the investigation did not establish that the Campaign coordinated orconspired with the Russian government in its election-interference activities.”

One inherent message of the first volume of the Mueller report is clear: It is time for the professional media to assume responsibility for its role in inflaming the public with a scandal that wasn’t proven, by endlessly quoting intelligence and partisan political sources whose claims went far beyond the evidence it slithered upon. (Continued)

Poll: Most voters say Obama or top aides likely knew about US intel spying on Trump

Most Americans now believe President Obama or his top staff knew U.S. intel officials agencies were spying on Donald Trump. However, the vast majority believe the offenders will not face criminal punishment.

That's according to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll of 1,000 "likely voters."

According to the poll, 58% said it's likely that Obama or his top aides were aware that U.S. intelligence agencies were spying on the Trump campaign and the Trump transition team.

But when it comes to possible accountability, only 31% say it’s likely that criminal charges will be brought against any government employees for that spying.

Just 12% say it's "very likely" that government employees will face criminal charges for the spying.

Did Obama or top aides knew of US intel spying on Trump?

58% Likely

36% Unlikely

Will government employees face criminal charges?

31% Likely

12% Very likely
