The Big Spin

Over the past couple of decades, quietly and with little oversight, our federal agencies have turned themselves into veritable PR machines.

They've built themselves high-tech television studios. They've hired armies of public relations staff. They buy advertising and commercials. They make videos. It's all to make themselves look good. And they're doing it with our tax money.

Sunday on Full Measure we set out to learn how much money the feds are spending on these efforts. And we'll have some maddening examples.

Air Wars

The US airlines are at war with Middle Eastern competitors that are flying routes in and out of the US to all kinds of places around the globe--not just the Middle East. This foreign competition has kicked down fares for US passengers by more than 30% in some cases.

But the big three US airlines say it's unfair competition and stands to destroy their industry and hurt American jobs. Scott Thuman will have both sides of the argument.

Challenge Coins

And Joce Sterman will Follow the Money and tell us how some federal officials and agencies are giving out expensive, symbolic tokens called "challenge coins" -- and we're paying for it.

We'll never waste your time rehashing news you've already heard all week.

Catch us on TV, online or on demand. See the options below!

'Is Twitter Really to Blame for Journalist's Woes?' --Howard Kurtz

The following is an excerpt from “Journalists now hate Twitter — because it exposes their excesses?” by Howard Kurtz of Fox News.

The love-hate relationship that journalists have with Twitter is turning mostly to hate, with an ample serving of self-loathing.

Even some of the most prominent posters are now blaming Twitter — or, more precisely, their addiction to the site — for many of the ills that plague the profession.

But there's an interesting twist here that's gotten less attention: Is Twitter corrupting journalism or exposing its utter unfairness?

Try a thought experiment: If every media type in America quit Twitter tomorrow, would journalism be that much better? Or would its deep-seated problems — many of which existed before Jack Dorsey's network started gaining traction in 2008 — continue unabated?

Given Twitter's strengths — as a forum for insta-coverage and debate, self-promotion and link-sharing that opens the national dialogue to many millions — the sudden disdain of its media users is remarkable.

Your "2020 Dream Team"? Unscientific Poll

A lot of Trump-Pence fans weighed in on our latest unscientific poll at SharylAttkisson.com.

The vast majority of respondents said that their 2020 "Dream Team" is Trump-Pence.

A significant number, however, didn't care for any of the hypothetical choices, whether Democrat or Republican.

Twenty-three percent answered "None of the Above."

The highest-ranking Democrat duo were the hypothetical team of Beta O'Rourke and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. (However, they garnered just one percent.)

#Trump-Pence (81%)

Any non-Trump team (2%)

Beto-AOC (1%)

Sanders-Klobuchar ( >1%)

Biden-Warren (>1%)

Harris-Booker (>1%)

Gillibrand-Delaney (0%)

None of the Above (23%)

Amazon censors films about vaccine safety

The following is an excerpt from "Amazon Pulls Vaccine-Questioning Films From Prime Video," published in The Epoch Times by June Fakkert, on March 5t, 2019. As of March 20, 2019 the videos in question have not been restored to Amazon’s streaming service.

Amazon pulled the documentary film “Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe” from its streaming services on March 2, in the most recent of several moves that restrict the public’s access to content that questions the safety of vaccines.

According to CNN, Amazon also made unavailable two other films: “We Don’t Vaccinate!” and “Shoot ‘Em Up: The Truth About Vaccines.”

Amazon didn’t respond to requests by The Epoch Times and by CNN as to why the films were removed.

The creators of “Vaxxed,” which has been available on Amazon since 2016, shared the rationale Amazon gave them for removing the documentary:

“Availability Issue: We are always listening to customer feedback and iterating on their behalf. During a quality assurance review, we found that the following title contains content that doesn’t meet our customer content quality expectations. As a result, all offers (‘Included with Prime,’ Buy, and Rent) have been removed. We will not be accepting resubmission of the impacted titles.”

Twitter Censorship?

The following is an excerpt from “Nunes sues Twitter, some users, seeks over $250M alleging anti-conservative 'shadow bans,' smears” written for Fox News by Greg Re and Cathrine Herridge. Twitter’s chief legal officer, Vijaya Gadde, said that the company would improve upon its record in the future.

California GOP Rep. Devin Nunes filed a major lawsuit seeking $250 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages against Twitter and a handful of its users on Monday, accusing the social media site of "shadow-banning conservatives" to secretly hide their posts, systematically censoring opposing viewpoints, and totally "ignoring" lawful complaints of repeated abusive behavior.

In a complaint filed in Virginia state court on Monday, obtained by Fox News, Nunes claimed Twitter wanted to derail his work on the House Intelligence Committee, which he chaired until 2019, as he looked into alleged and apparent surveillance abuses by the government. Nunes said Twitter was guilty of "knowingly hosting and monetizing content that is clearly abusive, hateful and defamatory – providing both a voice and financial incentive to the defamers – thereby facilitating defamation on its platform." The lawsuit alleged defamation, conspiracy and negligence, as well as violations of the state's prohibition against "insulting words" -- effectively fighting words that tend towards "violence and breach of the peace." The complaint sought not only damages, but also an injunction compelling Twitter to turn over the identities behind numerous accounts he said harassed and defamed him.

How big is "Trust Gap" between public and press?

A new poll finds the public trusts ABC News more than any other national media tested. Fox News scores better than The Washington Post. Who's at rock bottom? Find out for yourself by reading the poll findings and checking out the graphics of the results.

From Columbia Journalism Review:

For decades, we’ve known that Americans don’t trust the press. What we haven’t known is how people view the makings of journalism, from the use of fact checkers and anonymous sources to the question of whether money skews journalistic decision-making. This new national poll for CJR answers those questions, and points to how big the trust gap remains.
