Hidden FDA Reports Detail Harm Caused By Scores Of Medical Devices: Kaiser Health News

The following is an excerpt from a Kaiser Health News report by Christina Jewett.

Dr. Douglas Kwazneski was helping a Pittsburgh surgeon remove an appendix when something jarring happened. The surgical stapler meant to cut and seal the tissue around the appendix locked up.

Kwazneski later turned to the Food and Drug Administration’s public database that tracks medical device failures and “there was nothing,” he said. Yet when he surveyed leading surgeons on the matter, he discovered that more than two-thirds had experienced a stapler malfunction, or knew a peer who did. Such failures can have deadly consequences.

Kwazneski had no idea the FDA had quietly granted the makers of surgical staplers a special “exemption” allowing them to file reports of malfunctions in a database hidden from doctors and from public view.

“I don’t want to sound overdramatic here, but it seemed like a cover-up,” said Kwazneski, who practiced in Pasco County, Fla., from 2016 through earlier this year.

The FDA has built and expanded a vast and hidden repository of reports on device-related injuries and malfunctions, a Kaiser Health News investigation shows. Since 2016, at least 1.1 million incidents have flowed into the internal “alternative summary reporting” repository, instead of being described individually in the widely scrutinized public database known as MAUDE, which medical experts trust to identify problems that could put patients in jeopardy. The Curators

We’ve entered a brave, new world in the information age. Where it can be tough to know what’s real. Now there are movements to help us sort through it all— to teach our kids media literacy, to “curate” our information and cull out “fake news.” Sounds like a good idea. After all, who doesn’t want their news straight up? But what if some of those efforts are actually attempts to control the narrative?

Sharyl Attkisson: In January, the website BuzzFeed had a bombshell: anonymous sources claimed President Trump instructed his attorney to lie to Congress. And that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had the goods. It wasn’t long before Mueller took an unusual step— publicly denying it.

President Trump: I think that the BuzzFeed piece was a disgrace to our country.

Jeffrey Toobin: The press screwed up and they should apologize and you know the media isn’t as great as it thinks it is. This is a bad day for the news media. I mean, let’s not kid ourselves.

Sharyl: BuzzFeed stands by its report. Whatever the case, it underscores how it’s getting harder to separate fact from fiction in the news. Now, there are unprecedented efforts by third parties— to curate information for you. Some even want to give lessons to first graders on how to sort through fake news— between math and reading.

Person on street: I think children or young adults need to be informed about how to decipher what is real news and not.

Person on street: I think everyone, not just high school students, everyone should get educated about what to believe and not believe with the media.

Person on street: We really have to understand who you're hearing it from, why they may be telling you what they're telling you and generate your own viewpoints from there.

Sharyl: Do you think there is a way for the government or third parties to get involved in curating our information for us so that we can really read factual information? Or is that just a no win proposition?

Katy Grimes: I think the answer is absolutely no. It's a no win proposition.

Sharyl: Katy Grimes is an investigative journalist in California — one of the states where lawmakers have been pushing for new laws to root out “fake news” and teach media literacy in public schools. The question is — who decides what’s real when it’s a matter in dispute.

Grimes: I think we, we've seen a lot of history in the past when you've got governments that try to control media. We've got governments around the world still trying to control media and it's limiting what the populations who live there get. (Continued...)

Keith Ellison: A Question of #MeToo Standards

Watch our exclusive interview with a woman who accused former Congressman Keith Ellison of sexual misconduct.

Did a case of alleged abuse receive little media attention because it involves a Democrat minority woman accusing a powerful Democrat? Or is Ellison being falsely accused?

Note: since this report, Ellison was elected Attorney General of Minnesota.

The "Media Literacy" Deception

There are massive, organized efforts to begin "media literacy" and "anti-fake news" programs in colleges and elementary schools. Self-appointed third parties are stepping in to "curate" our news for us (like it or not). Nonprofits are developing curricula and agendas. There are efforts at the state level and internationally to pass laws requiring all of this.

But what if some of the efforts are funded and pushed by interests who are actually trying to censor and control the news, and block our access to certain facts and views?

Some watchdogs on left and right say it's happening and that it's an extremely dangerous trend.

I'll investigate in this week's cover story Sunday on Full Measure.

We'll hear from a former California teacher about her battle with "Goliath": The Teachers' Unions. Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court.

And Scott Thuman takes us on a trip to a South American waterfall wonderland you may never have seen nor heard about. But after you see our story you won’t forget it!

Once again, we never waste your time rehashing old news you've already heard all week. For where to watch on TV, on demand and online, check out the information below!
