When news is paid propaganda

You see it all the time, but you might not have heard of it: paid-propoganda-as-news - or as we'll use the Epoch Times' abbreviation, PPAN.

PPAN is exactly what it sounds like. An interested party pays news outlets piles of cash in order to have them air a biased story. People, corporations, and even countries can pay off news outlets to air biased material. Brian Cates of The Epoch Times wrote an article detailing how he says this can happen.:

Here’s how the 'disguise our paying client’s propaganda as our own news coverage' scam works: Let’s say you’re a fabulously wealthy Saudi prince who doesn’t like the recent direction that Mohammad Bin Salman has been taking your country for the past few years, and you’d like to try to influence American public opinion and—by extension—U.S. foreign policy toward Saudi Arabia. What you do is, you pay one of these political operative firms big money to get your point of view published in U.S. news outlets.

Brian Cates - The Epoch Times

The next question you probably have is "how can we tell if something is paid propaganda or real news?" As of right now, Cates says, it doesn't look like there's an easy way. He says best way is to do your own research. If a news piece involves a "juicy narrative with a lot of inside details" about power dynamics between big corporations, countries, or even internal American affairs, do a little digging of your own before coming to a conclusion, he advises.

Big names in DC and NY "bracing" for Jeffrey Epstein revelations

Jeffrey Epstein, accused sex trafficker of underage children

A Vanity Fair article BY GABRIEL SHERMAN takes a look at the potential impact of the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case.

The following are brief excerpts from Sherman's article with a link to the full report below.

Vanity Fair: “IT’S GOING TO BE STAGGERING, THE AMOUNT OF NAMES”: AS THE JEFFREY EPSTEIN CASE GROWS MORE GROTESQUE, MANHATTAN AND DC BRACE FOR IMPACT

The questions about Epstein are metastasizing much faster than they can be answered: Who knew what about Epstein’s alleged abuse? How, and from whom, did Epstein get his supposed $500 million fortune? Why did Acosta grant Epstein an outrageously lenient non-prosecution agreement? (And what does it mean that Acosta was reportedly told Epstein “belonged to intelligence”?)

But among the most pressing queries is which other famous people might be exposed for committing sex crimes. “There were other business associates of Mr. Epstein’s who engaged in improper sexual misconduct at one or more of his homes. We do know that,” said Brad Edwards, a lawyer for Courtney Wild, one of the Epstein accusers who gave emotional testimony at Epstein’s bail hearing. “In due time the names are going to start coming out.” (Attorneys for Epstein did not respond to a request for comment.)

Likely within days, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will release almost 2,000 pages of documents that could reveal sexual abuse by “numerous prominent American politicians, powerful business executives, foreign presidents, a well-known prime minister, and other world leaders,” according to the three-judge panel's ruling...

...Another person involved with litigation against Epstein told me: “It’s going to be staggering, the amount of names. It’s going to be contagion numbers.”

...How Epstein obtained his fortune is a matter of feverish speculation. His claim to a billionaire-only client list now seems laughable to the bankers I spoke with.

...In the absence of much other information, the reigning theory on Wall Street currently is that Epstein’s activities with women and girls were central to the building of his fortune, and his relations with some of his investors essentially amounted to blackmail.

Fake family ties among incoming refugees

Photo of child in custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Immigration officers report that 3,100 migrants over the past year have made fraudulent claims about their family ties in the U.S., according to NPR. Some migrants who claimed to be minors were actually over 18, and some who claimed to be parents of children were not actually related to them at all, officials report.

Border officials say this creates problems with families who make legitimate claims of asylum not being taken seriously, and illegal immigrant children not being taken care of properly.

In some cases, children are reportedly sent across the border multiple times with different groups of people to make them appear as if they are parts of different families. In general, because of protests over children being separated from family members when illegal immigrant adults cross the border, illegal immigrants who come with children are not detained. That provides incentive for illegal immigrants to hire or "rent" the use of children to claim as their own.

With more and more people coming in to America seeking asylum, border officials say it will become difficult to determine who really needs help, and who doesn't. They also say presenting fake documents at the border, such as birth certificates, is also an issue:

We found cases where adults have been coming in with kids who are not their kids, yet they're claiming that they're their children. We found birth certificates that have been forged.

—Ramiro Cordero, El Paso, Texas, Border Patrol Special Operations Supervisor (to NPR)

Trump-Russia news headlines not supported by Mueller report, according to RealClearInvestigations

Sensational news headlines after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Trump-Russia collusion often missed the mark. That’s according to an investigation by RealClear Investigations entitled: “CrowdStrikeOut: Mueller’s Own Report Undercuts Its Core Russia-Meddling Claims.”

Further examination of the Mueller report, according to RealClear Investigations, shows that the sensationalist headlines don't hold up under scrutiny and are undermined further by conflicts of interest:

  • There is no evidence to support Mueller's claim that the Kremlin helped President Trump get elected.
  • Mueller's investigators do not actually know how stolen Democratic Party emails were transferred to WikiLeaks.
  • The report "does not allege that the Russian government carried out a nefarious social media campaign."
  • U.S. intelligence cannot make absolute conclusions regarding the hacking of Democratic National Committee servers, because the servers were not analyzed by a neutral party.

A trade group seeks to aid five senators up for reelection

A trade group that represents more than 200 chemical companies will spend over $150,000 in July to support five senators up for reelection next year. That’s according to OpenSecrets.org, which tracks political campaign spending.

OpenSecrets.org lists the five senators as: Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.).

The American Chemistry Council has also reportedly spent to spend $1.3 million on lobbying just during the first quarter of 2019.

The American Chemistry Council is a 501c6 organization. Under IRS rules, such organizations are not permitted to be primarily politically motivated. However, OpenSecrets.org says some 501c6 organizations bend the rules and put 49% of their money towards a political cause... which technically isn't "the majority" of what their funds are spent on. Millions of the American Chemistry Council's dollars have gone towards political purposes as of 2017, according to OpenSecrets.org

Environmental groups have accused the American Chemistry Council of manipulating a Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act, which gave the EPA more power to ban potentially dangerous chemicals, but did not give it sufficient funding to do so without primarily considering the cost to companies.
