Medical Costs: How it pays to shop around

medical-costs-960x365

The following is an excerpt from a Full Measure story. High medical costs have Americans divided and looking for a solution.

As loud and divisive as the presidential campaign has been so far, both parties agree on one thing: health care is one of the top issues concerning Americans.

And a recent Rasmussen poll found: 59 percent of likely voters consider reducing the cost of health care more important than making sure everyone has insurance, which is the goal of Obamacare.

But what can consumers to do control their cost?

These days, it’s easy to comparison shop for just about anything, except medical care, one of the most expensive services you’ll ever need.

That gave us an idea. We partnered on a project to try to compare prices of specific procedures. We ended up with some incredible results that show it pays to shop around.

James Rosen, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Texas Farms

Sunday on Full Measure, I'm pleased to have James Rosen join us for his debut on the program. He'll speak with an author who paints a different portrait of the Jimmy Carter presidency than much of history does. Welcome James!

Above image: James Rosen (left) debuts on Sunday's "Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson"

I'll have an interview with the man leading a new investigation now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia probe concluded with no charges against any American for "Russia collusion." Senator Lindsey Graham heads the Judiciary Committee. He's spearheading a serious look into alleged misconduct by officials in the Department of Justice and FBI. He says evidence shows they misused powerful intelligence tools for political purposes to get Trump. We'll speak with him.

Senator Graham also has a lot to say about the current border crisis and what he thinks we should do about it.

And Scott Thuman goes down to the farm in Texas to explain how the trade war with China impacts the American farmer and the U.S. consumer.

Biden’s Ukranian Probe

Former Vice President Joe Biden

Above image: Joe Biden

The following is an excerpt from “Joe Biden’s 2020 Ukranian Nightmare” by John Solomon for The Hill

Two years after leaving office, Joe Biden couldn’t resist the temptation last year to brag to an audience of foreign policy specialists about the time as vice president that he strong-armed Ukraine into firing its top prosecutor.

In his own words, with video cameras rolling, Biden described how he threatened Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in March 2016 that the Obama administration would pull $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees, sending the former Soviet republic toward insolvency, if it didn’t immediately fire Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin.

“I said, ‘You’re not getting the billion.’ I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours. I looked at them and said: ‘I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money,’” Biden recalled telling Poroshenko.

“Well, son of a bitch, he got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time,” Biden told the Council on Foreign Relations event, insisting that President Obama was in on the threat.

Interviews with a half-dozen senior Ukrainian officials confirm Biden’s account, though they claim the pressure was applied over several months in late 2015 and early 2016, not just six hours of one dramatic day. Whatever the case, Poroshenko and Ukraine’s parliament obliged by ending Shokin’s tenure as prosecutor. Shokin was facing steep criticism in Ukraine, and among some U.S. officials, for not bringing enough corruption prosecutions when he was fired.

Escaping Honduras; Escaping MS-13

The following is an excerpt from a Full Measure story. - Jonathan Elias travels to Honduras to get a glimpse into the gang violence and desperation that leads Hondurans to escape to America.

Honduras is one of the poorest and most violent countries in Central America, surrounded by Spanish-speaking nations with stronger economies. Panama and Costa Rica have had generous asylum policies and, to the north, Guatemala and Mexico have been open to migrants in recent years. Despite that, many still choose the long, grueling trek to America...

MS-13 is as violent as gangs come.. their motto: kill, steal, rape, control. The White House says there are about 10,000 MS-13 gang members in the US today.

On Long Island in 2016, MS-13 members used machetes and bats to kill 16-year-old Nisa Mickens and her best friend Kayla Cuevas.

In Maryland in 2017, these three MS-13 members were arrested for brutally stabbing a victim more than 100 times - cutting off his head and cutting out his heart.

Nationwide, since 2012, an average of about 35 murders have been tied to MS-13 every year.

There are thousands of MS-13 here in Honduras and we arranged for a rare sit down with two young members.

Right now, we’re heading into an area that’s completely controlled by the gangs. We’re going to sit down with two members of MS-13 and we’re told that when you come into the neighborhood, you have to have your windows down so they can see who’s coming in. (Continued...)
