Trust in media about the same as Wikipedia: Results of an exclusive Full Measure poll

A new poll conducted by ScottRasmussen.com for Full Measure shows just how much trust in the national media has declined in recent years--particularly when it comes to political reporting.

More American voters believe national political news coverage is "inaccurate and unreliable" than "accurate and reliable" (43% to 38%).

That's a margin that's similar to marks given to Wikipedia for credibility (or lack thereof).

By a margin of 57% to 26% respondents said national political reporters use their position to advance an agenda rather than report the facts.

And overwhelmingly, those answering the poll said matters have grown worse over the past five years.

Read the poll results below and watch our story about it now at Full Measure.

(Mis)trust in Media: an exclusive Full Measure poll

You won't want to miss results of our exclusive poll on trust in the national news media this Sunday on Full Measure.

Our poll conducted by ScottRasmussen.com focuses largely on national political reporting. We'll also take a look at some specific examples of media missteps and measure how the public reacted to them.

Distrust of the media isn't a new phenomenon. We'll reach back to the 60s to tell that part of the story.

We'll also speak to a therapist who has developed novel new strategies for fighting pain without opioids. Her methods are gaining ground among those who want to manage pain with no risk of side effects or addiction.

And Scott Thuman in Hanoi, Vietnam on a Saturday night--need I say more?

Alleged Sexual Harassment by members of Congress

There are new claims of sexual harassment from Capitol Hill custodial staff.

The staff members say that they have experienced harassment by Congressional staff, including unnamed members of Congress.

The news comes in a report on the Architect of the Capitol's (AoC) response to reports of sexual harassment complaints.

The following is an excerpt from the story about the claims, written by Cristina Marcos in The Hill:

Custodial staff on Capitol Hill have reported sexual harassment while cleaning the offices of members of Congress, according to a recent inspector general report. The revelation is part of a report on the Architect of the Capitol's (AoC) response to sexual harassment complaints over the last 10 years. The Architect's Office is responsible for managing and maintaining the Capitol, as well as House and Senate office buildings.

According to the inspector general report, interviews with architect leadership revealed that "some custodial staff, especially those on the night shift, report exposure to harassment while working in the offices of Members of Congress." "Some staff have reported overhearing harassing conversations, being the target of harassment, and observing materials such as pornography, but do not speak up due to fear of losing their jobs," the report states. The inspector general report is dated March 15, but Roll Call first highlighted its findings on Friday. The report said that those employees "feel unprotected and disadvantaged" and may not necessarily be aware of their options and protections from harassment, especially in situations with such an imbalance of power involving a member of Congress. “No one had an answer when we asked 'What happens if the harasser is a member of Congress?' This was not a hypothetical question. It happens," one employee said.

Another response from an employee complained that the AoC inadequately handled allegations of misconduct from members of Congress. “Past issues of temper, volatility and threatened violence by members of Congress were weakly addressed by AOC executives and other members of Congress. I worked through my trauma through my own sources, subsequently," one employee said. (Continued)

READ: The indictment of Julian Assange

Here’s the link to the Department of Justice document detailing the indictment of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange dated March 6, 2018.

The indictment doesn’t associate Assange with Russian documents or spying.

The charges are related to former intelligence analyst Bradley Manning and his theft of top secret government documents.

Bubbling Crude. Black Gold. Texas Tea.

You may not have heard, but the U.S. has become the world's number one oil producer. The heart of the surge is in west Texas and the big boom has drawn thousands of people seeking their fortunes. It's possible for people without a high school diploma to earn six figures, as long as they're willing to work hard. But the oil surge has an impact far beyond Texas: it means we have new leverage for negotiations on the world stage. Scott Thuman will have all the details Sunday on Full Measure.

Also this week on Full Measure, we hear quite a lot about spying -- but not so much about the spying that's happening at some of our academic institutions. It turns out foreign researchers are stealing our intellectual property and results of research funded by grants of your tax dollars. We'll talk with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) about what he thinks needs to be done.[hr]

[hr]Lisa Fletcher updates her investigation into a huge spending hole that critics call the Pentagon's slush fund.

And Joce Sterman takes us to a creepy corner of a parking lot in Georgia and-- wait until you hear what she finds!

We never waste your time rehashing news you've already seen all week. Find out how to watch on TV, on line or on demand by clicking the link below.

A Supreme Court "Bromance"?

The following is an excerpt from “Conservatives' takeover of Supreme Court stalled by John Roberts-Brett Kavanaugh bromance” by Richard Wolf

WASHINGTON – The conservative takeover of the Supreme Court that was anticipated following President Donald Trump's two selections has been stalled by a budding bromance between the senior and junior justices.

Chief Justice John Roberts and the court's newest member, Brett Kavanaugh, have voted in tandem on nearly every case that's come before them since Kavanaugh joined the court in October. They've been more likely to side with the court's liberal justices than its other conservatives.

The two justices, both alumni of the same District of Columbia-based federal appeals court, have split publicly only once in 25 official decisions. Their partnership has extended, though less reliably, to orders the court has issued on abortion funding, immigration and the death penalty in the six months since Kavanaugh's bitter Senate confirmation battle ended in a 50-48 vote.

Escaping Honduras; Escaping MS-13

The following is an excerpt from a Full Measure story. - Jonathan Elias travels to Honduras to get a glimpse into the gang violence and desperation that leads Hondurans to escape to America.

Honduras is one of the poorest and most violent countries in Central America, surrounded by Spanish-speaking nations with stronger economies. Panama and Costa Rica have had generous asylum policies and, to the north, Guatemala and Mexico have been open to migrants in recent years. Despite that, many still choose the long, grueling trek to America...

MS-13 is as violent as gangs come.. their motto: kill, steal, rape, control. The White House says there are about 10,000 MS-13 gang members in the US today.

On Long Island in 2016, MS-13 members used machetes and bats to kill 16-year-old Nisa Mickens and her best friend Kayla Cuevas.

In Maryland in 2017, these three MS-13 members were arrested for brutally stabbing a victim more than 100 times - cutting off his head and cutting out his heart.

Nationwide, since 2012, an average of about 35 murders have been tied to MS-13 every year.

There are thousands of MS-13 here in Honduras and we arranged for a rare sit down with two young members.

Right now, we’re heading into an area that’s completely controlled by the gangs. We’re going to sit down with two members of MS-13 and we’re told that when you come into the neighborhood, you have to have your windows down so they can see who’s coming in. (Continued...)

The Jussie Smollett Case: Cops Demand Federal Probe of Obama Aide

Screen-Shot-2019-02-18-at-1.58.13-PM

The following is an excerpt from “Cops Demand Federal Probe of Obama Aide in Jussie Smollett Case” by Kyle S. Reyes in Law Enforcement Today

The Jussie Smollett investigation has taken an interesting turn as Chicago’s police union is now calling for a federal investigation into the county’s top prosecutor for allegedly interfering in the case.

This, after that the prosecutor was allegedly contacted by Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff.

The Fraternal Order of Police represents the department’s rank-and-file.  Earlier this week, they sent a letter asking the Department of Justice to probe Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

Foxx attempted to convince Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to turn Smollett’s case over to the FBI.  It happened after Tina Tchen, the former senior Obama aide, reached out to her and the “Empire” star’s family had “concerns.”

“That recusal is wholly insufficient,” FOP president Kevin Graham said in a statement. “In order for Ms. Foxx to properly charge and try this case, her entire office should have recused itself and a special prosecutor been appointed.”

Tchen sent Foxx a text just three days after Smollett reported the attack and when he was still considered a victim.

“I wanted to give you a call on behalf of Jussie Smollett and family who I know. They have concerns about the investigation,” Tchen wrote.

Foxx then emailed Tchen later that day.  Tchen is a close pal of Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s wife.

“Spoke to the Superintendent Johnson. I convinced him to Reach out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation. He is reaching out now and will get to me shortly.”
