The Pentagon’s fiscal stars… and duds

A new watchdog report ranks the best and worst Pentagon agencies in terms of finances. Among the best: A program under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Among the worst: The Defense Logistics Agency.

The new “audit report card” comes from the nonpartisan think tank Truth in Accounting (TIA).

The Pentagon is notorious for its accounting problems.

Since 1990, Congress has required federal agencies to submit to annual audits so their spending practices can be evaluated. But the Defense Department exempted itself every year until 2018, because its financial statements were deemed “not auditable.”

In 2018, the Defense Department submitted to its first ever audit, led by the Inspector General, and got a failing grade.

It also received a failing grade in 2019.

However, TIA says the Defense Department did show improvement in 2019 “addressing issues that undermine the trustworthiness of DoD financial management.”

The highest ranking (best) agencies in the TIA audit were:

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Civil Works Program
  • Military Retirement Fund
  • Defense Health Agency – Contract Resource Management
  • Department of Veterans Affairs

The worst performing agencies in the audit were:

  • Defense Health Program
  • Defense Logistics Agency
  • U.S. Navy
  • U.S. Transportation Command

TIA notes that although improvements have been made from 2018 to 2019, Pentagon auditors have been “identifying new problems faster than [they] resolve[s] outstanding issues.”
