Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance will reportedly appear for a public hearing on May 1 before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) made the announcement alongside his Republican colleagues and chairs from the following committees: Oversight and Accountability, Energy and Commerce, E&C Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and E&C Subcommittee on Health.
EcoHealth is a controversial US-based non-profit whose stated mission is to prevent pandemics in part by funding vaccine research. The company is funded by multiple federal government agencies and used some taxpayer funds to pay for dangerous gain-of-function research at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) prior to the outbreak of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.
Many have implicated the China lab and the US-partnered research in the creation and release of Covid-19. China refused to turn over records and allow inspections.
During a closed-door transcribed interview with the Committees on November 14, 2023, Daszak, a veteriarian, made multiple statements inconsistent with documents and evidence reviewed by the Committees, according to the committees. They added that these inconsistencies raise serious questions about the veracity of EcoHealth’s public statements, including its insistence that the research it funded at the WIV could not have caused the pandemic.
The Republicans are calling on Daszak to address the discrepancies in his testimony and publicly explain EcoHealth’s relationship with the WIV.
Nobody in China or the US has ever been held accountable for the gain of function research or any lapses.

In preparation for the public hearing, the Republicans are also requesting further information from Daszak about EcoHealth’s communication with the WIV, public health agencies, and prominent individuals involved in the suppression of the lab-leak hypothesis.
Daszak told the Committees that EcoHealth intended to conduct dangerous gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses at a University of North Carolina lab if its proposal — known widely as DEFUSE — was approved by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
A recently released Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) document production directly contradicts this statement and suggests that EcoHealth intended to mislead DARPA and conduct the risky research at the WIV instead.
Scientific evidence and available intelligence indicate that a research-related incident at a lab in Wuhan remains a plausible cause of the Covid-19 pandemic.
