President Barack Obama is the worst President since World War II and more voters say America would have been better off if Republican Mitt Romney had won in 2012. That, according to a new Quinnipiac University national poll.

More than half of voters, 54 percent, say that the Obama Administration is not competent at running the government.

Second worst President since WWII? George W. Bush.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

“Would Mitt have been a better fit? More voters in hindsight say yes.”

Best President since WWII? Ronald Reagan, say 35 percent of voters.

Here’s how the other “Best Presidents Since WWII” results came out:

Reagan 35%

Clinton 18%

Kennedy 15%

Obama 8%

Among Democrats, 34% vote Clinton “best President” and 18% give their vote to Obama and Kennedy.

Men are more likely to view Obama as worse than George W. Bush, women are more likely to see Obama as better. Independent voters see Obama as worse than Bush by a 41-31% margin.

It’s primarily Republicans and independent voters who largely believe Romney would have been better for America. Most Democrats disagree.

President Obama’s overall job approval rating hit its all time low last December at a negative 38 – 57 percent. Today, it’s slightly better at 40-53 percent but slightly worse at than an April 2 national survey (42-50 percent).

On character, voters are split 48 – 48 percent on whether he’s honest and trustworthy. He has a slight edge regarding whether people believe he cares about their needs and problems:  51 – 47 percent think he does.

According to Quinnipiac, Obama gets negative grades for his handling of most key issues:
Negative 40 – 55 percent for the economy;
Negative 37 – 57 percent for foreign policy;
Negative 40 – 58 percent for health care;
50 – 40 percent for the environment;
Negative 44 – 51 percent for terrorism.

Methodology: from June 24 – 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,446 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. According to Quinnipiac, its poll “directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.”
